Implementing federal food service guidelines in federal and private worksite cafeterias in the United States leads to improved health outcomes and is cost saving
AbstractPoor diet increases cardiometabolic disease risk, yet the impact of food service guidelines on employee health and its cost effectiveness is poorly understood. Federal food service guidelines (FFSG) aim to provide United States (U.S.) government employees with healthier food options. Using microsimulation modeling, we estimated changes in the incidence of cardiometabolic disease, related mortality, and the cost effectiveness of implementing FFSG in nationally representative model populations of government and private company employees across 5 years and lifetime. We based estimates on changes in workplace intake of...

A Score to Predict Home Discharge for Patients With Stroke in Rehabilitation Units
Stroke is a global health problem, with an estimated lifetime risk of 23% in high-income Asia-Pacific regions, including Japan.1 In Japan, rehabilitation units for functional recovery after stroke have been established as a Japanese version of convalescent rehabilitation, and are covered by insurance. It is important to predict the discharge destination of patients with stroke and to appropriately plan an efficient discharge early in the hospitalization process. A score can be used to predict home discharge of patients from hospitals after an acute stroke, but it is not known whether it can be applied to patients in rehabilitation units.

Risk communication in acute stroke patients - from qualitative data to a pilot randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Acute stroke patients were able to understand risk communication. Visualization helped them capture information on stroke risk.PMID:35227636 | DOI:10.1016/j.zefq.2022.01.001

Cost-effectiveness of a photopethysmographic procedure for screening for atrial fibrillation in 6 European countries
Strokes cause an estimated annual health care burden of 170 billion euros across Europe. Atrial fibrillation is one of the major risk factors for stroke and increases the individual risk 4.2-fold. But preventi...

Evaluating community-driven cardiovascular health policy changes in the United States using agent-based modeling
This study used an agent-based model to estimate long-term impacts of a comprehensive smoke-free policy, as it was implemented in two communities, Arlington and Mesquite, Texas. The model predicted the percentage of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and diabetes in the population 10 and 20  years following policy adoption. In Arlington, the percentage of the population with these conditions each decreased by approximately 0.5% over 20 years; in Mesquite, the percentage of the population with diabetes, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke decreased by 1.1%, 0.6%, and 0.3%, respecti vely, after 20 years. The results w...

Empiric segmentation of high-risk patients: a structured literature review
CONCLUSIONS: Empiric segmentation can yield clinically relevant groups of patients with complex medical needs. Segmentation results are context dependent, suggesting the need for careful design and interpretation of segmentation models to ensure that results can inform clinical care and program design in the target setting.PMID:35139299 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2022.88752
