Who Gets Pott ’ s Puffy Tumor?
Discussion Pott’s puffy tumor (PPT) was first described by Sir Percivall Pott in 1775 and who also described other orthopaedic and oncological diseases subsequently named for him. “It is a subperiosteal abscess of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus associated with underlying frontal osteomyelitis.” The tender edema and swelling of the forehead is the sign of PPT. Associated fever, headache, and rhinorrhea along with similar problems such as postnasal drip or nasal congestion are common. Associated ophthalmological problems include peri-orbital or eyelid edema and/or preseptal cellulitis. Ptosis and di...

Botolinum toxin in rhinitis: Literature review and posterior nasal injection in allergic rhinitis
ConclusionBased on our review of current literature, BTX shows clear efficacy on symptoms of both intrinsic and allergic rhinitis, with a good safety profile. Single‐dose posterior nasal injection demonstrates good efficacy and duration of action, with moderate discomfort. Level of Evidence4. Laryngoscope, 2017

Elimination of pain improves specificity of clinical diagnostic criteria for adult chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionClinical diagnostic criteria overestimate the prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis. Removing facial pain, ear pain, dental pain, and headache increased specificity without a concordant loss in sensitivity. Given the high prevalence of sinusitis, improved clinical diagnostic criteria may assist primary care providers in more accurately predicting the presence of inflammation, thereby reducing inappropriate antibiotic use or delayed referral for evaluation of primary headache syndromes. Is nonabsorbable nasal packing after septoplasty essential? A meta ‐analysis
ConclusionsNonabsorbable nasal packing is no more effective than treatments without packing after septoplasty. Septal splints and transseptal sutures reduce postoperative pain, headache, and synechia. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2016

Variable utilization patterns of computed tomography for rhinosinusitis in emergency departments
ConclusionsSeveral socioeconomic, demographic, and geographic factors are associated with sinus CT scan use in the ED for rhinosinusitis. This study has implications for CT imaging guidelines in the ED setting and demonstrates a need for further investigation of healthcare utilization disparities. Level of Evidence2C. Comorbidities in patients with all‐positive symptoms on sinonasal outcomes test quality‐of‐life instrument
ConclusionThe SNOT‐20 questionnaire assists clinicians to monitor outcomes in patients treated for CRS. However, clinicians should suspect other underlying chronic conditions in SNOT‐20 pan‐positive patients. Level of Evidence3B. Laryngoscope, 2015

Effect of steroids for nasal polyposis surgery: A placebo‐controlled, randomized, double‐blind study
ConclusionsPreoperative administration of systemic corticosteroids improves the perioperative visibility by reducing blood loss and shortens the operation time. We recommend the use of preoperative corticosteroid for the safety of the patients. The optimum dose and duration have not been established and require further studies.Level of Evidence: 1b Laryngoscope, 2015

Mucosal contact points and paranasal sinus pneumatization: Does radiology predict headache causality?
ConclusionsRadiological identification of MCP, CB, or hyperpneumatized sinuses does not seem to be a predictor of headache causality. Further studies are required to identify clinical scenarios in which these variations may contribute to pain symptoms. Level of Evidence3b. Laryngoscope, 2015

EQ‐5D‐derived health utility values in patients undergoing surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsSinus surgery provides improvement in HUV in patients with CRS. These values may be paired with costs of care to perform cost‐utility analysis on this group of patients. Level of Evidence2c. Laryngoscope, 2014

Comprehensive management of patients presenting to the otolaryngologist for Sinus pressure, pain, or headache
ConclusionsWe present the first series detailing management of patients with sinus‐headache pain in an otolaryngology practice. Such symptoms have multifactorial etiologies. Positive sinus CT results require cautious interpretation. ESS should be judiciously used. Interdisciplinary care is critical for success: approximately 50% of patients benefited from otolaryngic management, 50% needed neurological treatment, and 7% required dental disease management. The impact of comorbid migraine on quality‐of‐life outcomes after endoscopic sinus surgery
ConclusionPatients with comorbid migraine and CRS are more likely to have less severe evidence of disease and worse preoperative baseline QOL scores. This may imply that comorbid migraine disorder, in the setting of CRS, compels these patients to seek surgical management earlier in the disease process. Regardless, ESS provides comparable improvement for both patients with and without comorbid migraine. Level of Evidence2c. Laryngoscope, 2014
