Association between hypertension and stroke in US adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007 to 2018
CONCLUSION: Our results show that there is a significant positive correlation between BP and stroke. When the systolic blood pressure (SBP) is about 140 mmHg, the risk of stroke is the lowest; Male patients with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of about 80mmHg have a lower risk of stroke.PMID:36260517 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2022.2138470

Incidence and predictors of progression of carotid atherosclerosis in a low-income Chinese population-a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first longitudinal study to explore the incidence and predictors of CAS progression in a low-income rural population in China with a high prevalence of stroke. More detailed and precise strategies for prevention and intervention of CAS progression are necessary, especially in low-income rural areas in China.PMID:34696679 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2021.1997483

Sex-disparities in risk factors and atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients
Conclusion: Among diabetic people, compared to males, females had a higher comorbid burden but received less optimal treatment, which might partly explain their higher prevalence of composite ASCVD and CHD.PMID:33874831 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2021.1917930

Sex- related differences in the factors associated with outcomes among patients with strokes of undetermined source: a hospital-based follow-up study.
CONCLUSION: The factors associated with outcomes in SUS differed by sex. For male patients, more severe stroke and hyperlipidemia were associated with poor outcomes in SUS. Risk factors for poor outcomes in female patients were stroke severity, age, and TC level. These findings suggest that taking measures to manage blood lipid levels and severe stroke among patients with SUS are important for both male and female patients and are crucial for reducing the burden of stroke in China. Sex-specific cardiac and vascular responses to hypertension in Chinese populations without overt cardiovascular diseases.
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the current study indicates cardiac and vascular responses to hypertension are greater in women than in men, manifesting as an increased estimated LV filling pressure and arterial elastance in women. PMID: 33032484 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The clinical significance of isolated diastolic hypertension.
Authors: Chrysant SG Abstract The prevalence of isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH) has been increased in hypertensive subjects with the new 2017 ACC/AHA blood pressure treatment guidelines to 6.5% from 1.3% by the JNC-7 guidelines. However, its clinical significance as a cause of adverse cardiovascular (CV) events especially in older subjects has been debated by several investigators, who have demonstrated no adverse CV effects of untreated IDH, but not by other. It is also more common in the young subjects who are at low CV risk and quite rare in the older subjects, who are at increased CV risk. Treatment of ID...

The association between serum uric acid levels and ischemic stroke in essential hypertension patients.
Conclusions: SUA was an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke, and also have a good predictive value ischemic stroke among hypertensive patients in Chinese community. PMID: 32303139 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Determinants of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Asymptomatic Elders: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study in Rural China.
Discussion: These findings suggest that there is an urgent need to delay atherosclerosis progression and reduce the stroke burden by managing hypertension, especially for men. Moreover, to decrease the stroke burden in rural China, caution is advised regarding lipid-lowering treatment in elderly patients without MetS. PMID: 32297560 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A nonlinear association between resting heart rate and ischemic stroke among community elderly hypertensive patients.
Conclusions: In Chinese elderly hypertensive patients, elevated resting heart rate was an independent predictor of ischemic stroke, and the optimal resting heart rate was around 70bpm. PMID: 31829063 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Alzheimer's dementia: pathogenesis and impact of cardiovascular risk factors on cognitive decline.
Authors: Wanleenuwat P, Iwanowski P, Kozubski W Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia manifesting as alterations in cognitive abilities, behavior and deterioration in memory which is progressive, leading to gradual worsening of symptoms. Major pathological features of AD are accumulations of neuronal amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, with early lesions appearing primarily in the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved in memory and learning. Cardiovascular related risk factors are believed to play a crucial role in disease development and the acceleration of cognitive ...

The single use of body mass index for the obesity paradox is misleading and should be used in conjunction with other obesity indices.
Authors: Chrysant SG, Chrysant GS Abstract Overweight and obesity in children and adults have significantly risen in the US and worldwide due to biological, environmental, and cultural drivers and account for about 2.1 billion people. In addition, obesity, even metabolically healthy, is a major risk factor for the metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, all significant causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD) heart failure (HF) and stroke. However, despite these causative effects, overweight and obesity frequently, confer a protection in patients with estab...
