Association between REM-related mild obstructive sleep apnea and common cardiometabolic diseases
CONCLUSION: Common CMDs, particularly HT, tend to show an association with REM-OSA in patients with mild OSA, but this association did not reach statistically significant levels.PMID:37115354 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-023-02821-4

Restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease among patients with resistant hypertension versus stroke patients-a prospective study
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of RLS among patients with resistant hypertension. RLS characteristics are different from those in patients with stroke, and very similar to primary RLS.PMID:34716522 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-021-02490-1

The differences of carotid atherosclerosis among non-OSAHS and OSAHS patients of different severities: a cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSION: As far as CIMT, carotid plaque, blood flow velocity, and blood lipid are concerned, the severity of CA is not affected by the severity of OSAHS accordantly. The relationship between OSAHS and CA may not be dose dependent. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study has been registered on clinical trials (No. NCT03665818). Is there an association among sleep duration, nap, and stroke? Findings from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.
CONCLUSION: In this elderly Chinese population, short total sleep duration per 24 h, not merely daytime napping or nighttime sleep, was significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke. Preventive measures for stroke may require a focus on elderly, sedentary individuals who report other health problems. PMID: 32562171 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between the high risk for obstructive sleep apnea and intracranial carotid artery calcification in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the presence of calcium in symptomatic intracranial ICA was related to high risk for OSA in patients with acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 32562170 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Increased platelet activation in sleep apnea subjects with intermittent hypoxemia.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased platelet activation was present in otherwise healthy subjects with intermittent nocturnal hypoxemia due to underlying OSA. This prothrombotic milieu in the vasculature is likely a key contributing factor toward development of thrombosis and cardiovascular disease. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT00859950. PMID: 32036486 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Short- and long-term continuous positive airway pressure usage in the post-stroke population with obstructive sleep apnea.
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that the long-term usage of CPAP therapy is possible with most of the attrition occurring in the first 3 months. Upfront healthcare resource allocation to CPAP initiation and usage in this population may improve longer-term usage. PMID: 30820850 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Self-reported snoring and incident cardiovascular disease events: results from the Jackson Heart Study.
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, self-reported habitual snoring was not associated with incident CVD among this large African American cohort. Future studies providing objective data on snoring and sleep apnea may provide more information on the snoring-CVD association among African Americans. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Identification Number: NCT00005485. PMID: 30756321 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of gallstones in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a nationwide observational cohort study.
CONCLUSION: The study shows a strong association between OSA and gallstones. Moreover, our findings suggest the requirement for survey and health education for gallstones in OSA and further studies to verify whether the treatment of OSA can reduce the risk of gallstones. Association between insomnia and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Han Chinese individuals in Shandong Province, China.
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that insomnia is independently and significantly associated with diabetes mellitus in the northern Chinese population, especially in the 40-59-year-old age group and in males. PMID: 29961182 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Severe obstructive sleep apnea is associated with cochlear function impairment.
CONCLUSIONS: Acoustic transference function of middle ear is similar in adults with and without OSA. Severe OSA is independently associated with cochlear function impairment in patients with no significant co-morbidities. PMID: 28681146 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Diagnosing and managing sleep apnea in patients with chronic cerebrovascular disease: a randomized trial of a home-based strategy.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with cerebrovascular disease and hypertension have a high prevalence of OSA. The use of portable polysomnography, and auto-titrating CPAP in the patients' homes, improved both the diagnosis and the treatment for sleep apnea compared with usual care but did not lower blood pressure.
