Effect of Collateral Blood Flow on Patients Undergoing Endovascular Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Collaterals correlate with baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, perfusion-weighted imaging volume, and good reperfusion. However, target mismatch patients who reperfuse seem to have favorable outcomes at a similar rate, irrespective of the collateral score. Enrollment Yield and Reasons for Screen Failure in a Large Prehospital Stroke Trial Brief Reports
Conclusions— In this large, multicenter prehospital trial, nearly 40% of every calls from the field to physician-investigators resulted in trial enrollments. The most common reasons for nonenrollment were out of window last known well time, prestroke confounding medical condition, and absence of a consent provider. Differential Effect of Baseline Computed Tomographic Angiography Collaterals on Clinical Outcome in Patients Enrolled in the Interventional Management of Stroke III Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusion— Using data from a large randomized controlled trial (IMS III), we show that baseline computed tomographic angiography collaterals are a robust determinant of final clinical outcome and could be used to select patients for endovascular therapy. Burden and Outcome of Prevalent Ischemic Brain Disease in a National Acute Stroke Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our national cohort of patients with acute ischemic stroke, nearly two thirds had a prior overt stroke or subclinical stroke. Risk of poor functional outcomes was increased for patients with prior stroke, both overt and subclinical.

Family History in Young Patients With Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— Although present in about a third of patients, a family history of stroke is not specifically related to stroke pathogenic subtypes in patients with young stroke. Young women with stroke more often report stroke in the maternal lineage. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00414583.

Family History and Risk of Recurrent Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study suggests that elevated risks of recurrent stroke are associated with having relatives with early-onset stroke and siblings with stroke histories, implying that additional precautions may be needed in such populations.

Increased work and social engagement is associated with increased stroke specific quality of life in stroke survivors at 3  months and 12 months post-stroke: a longitudinal study of an Australian stroke cohort.
CONCLUSION: Engaging in work and social activities is an important factor associated with stroke-specific domains of QOL over time. It is recommended that services focus on improving work and social engagement given their importance related to QOL in the first year of recovery post-stroke. Identifying and treating those with depressive symptoms may enhance QOL in the early months post-stroke. In-Hospital Stroke Recurrence and Stroke After Transient Ischemic Attack: Frequency and Risk Factors Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In-hospital stroke recurrence was low with optimal current management. Patients with a history of TIA, severe symptomatic carotid stenosis, or uncommon causes of stroke were at higher risk. Pneumonia was associated with a higher risk of stroke recurrence in patients with initial TIA or minor stroke but not in the overall population studied. Aphasia may bias the detection rate by concealing new neurological symptoms.

Rates and Determinants of 5-Year Outcomes After Atrial Fibrillation-Related Stroke: A Population Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— AF-stroke is associated with considerable long-term morbidity, fatality, stroke recurrence, and nursing home requirement. Adequately resourced national AF strategies to improve AF detection and prevention are needed.

Diagnostic and prognostic role of resistin and copeptin in acute ischemic stroke.
DISCUSSION: Resistin, but not copeptin levels are higher in acute ischemic stroke patients early after the stroke onset, than in age and gender matched stroke-free controls. Moreover, higher copeptin concentrations are predictive of poor short term functional outcome after ischemic stroke. If confirmed in larger prospective studies, resistin and copeptin could improve clinical diagnosis of stroke and effective management of patient recovery. Psychosocial Distress and Stroke Risk in Older Adults Original Contributions
Conclusions— Increasing levels of psychosocial distress are related to excess risk of both fatal and nonfatal stroke in older black and white adults. Additional research is needed to examine pathways linking psychosocial distress to cerebrovascular disease risk.

17q25 Locus Is Associated With White Matter Hyperintensity Volume in Ischemic Stroke, But Not With Lacunar Stroke Status Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study provides support for an association between the 17q25 locus and WMH. In contrast, it is not associated with lacunar stroke, suggesting that the association does not act by promoting small-vessel arteriopathy or the same arteriopathy responsible for lacunar infarction.

Impact of Completeness of Ascertainment of Minor Stroke on Stroke Incidence: Implications for Ideal Study Methods Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Reliance on routine clinical coding underestimates the incidence of minor stroke. To improve comparability of incidence studies, researchers should assess patients referred with transient ischemic attack, and all studies should stratify incidence rates by stroke severity.
