The prevalence and course of neuropsychiatric symptoms in stroke patients impact functional recovery during in-hospital rehabilitation.
Conclusions: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation and have a substantially negative impact on rehabilitation outcomes. Stroke patients with prolonged acute-phase hospitalization and low functioning at admission must be monitored to detect any deterioration in the neuropsychiatric state. Understanding Stroke Survivorship: Expanding the Concept of Poststroke Disability Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Stroke survivors have more participation restrictions than can be accounted for by sociodemographic profiles and comorbidity burden. Future work aimed at improving physical capacity, reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms, and improving aphasia/dysarthria has potential to enhance participation.

Real-world affected upper limb activity in chronic stroke: an examination of potential modifying factors.
CONCLUSIONS: Severity of motor dysfunction and ADL status should be taken into consideration when setting goals for UL activity in people with chronic stroke. Given the strong, positive correlation between affected and unaffected UL activity, encouragement to increase activity of the unaffected UL may increase affected UL activity. The effect of upper-extremity aerobic exercise on complex regional pain syndrome type I: a randomized controlled study on subacute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: UEAE made an excellent improvement in the symptoms and signs of CRPS I. Combined treatment of conventional physiotherapy and aerobic exercises may be an excellent synthesis for this syndrome in these patients. PMID: 25943440 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Perceived Unmet Rehabilitation Needs 1 Year After Stroke: An Observational Study From the Swedish Stroke Register Brief Reports
Conclusions— Unfulfilled rehabilitation needs 1 year poststroke are common and associated with high age, dependency, pain, and depression. Long-term follow-up systems should, therefore, be comprehensive and address multiple domains of poststroke problems, rather than having a single-domain focus.

Combining therapeutic approaches: rTMS and aerobic exercise in post-stroke depression: a case series.
Conclusion Combined treatment of rTMS and AEx appears safe, feasible, and tolerable in individuals with a history of stroke and at least mild depressive symptoms. All participants had good compliance and demonstrated improvements in both depressive symptoms and walking capacity. PMID: 28982298 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Screening Adherence for Depression Post Stroke: Evaluation of Outpatients, a London Experience (SAD PEOPLE).
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the frequency of depressive symptoms in an outpatient cohort and demonstrates how screening rates can be improved by using a standardized form. Routine PHQ-9 completion at the first outpatient visit was associated with more physician-patient discussion and documentation regarding mood. PMID: 30346909 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors associated with quality of life early after ischemic stroke: the role of resilience.
DISCUSSION: Resilience was an independent predictor of quality of life beyond anxiety and depression in patients with ischemic stroke. Interventions aimed at improving resilience at acute hospitalization might be a worthwhile addition to improve quality of life early after stroke. PMID: 30957683 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
