Ultrasound examination of the carotid artery for improved prediction of cardiovascular events and the effect of statin treatment in advanced atherosclerosis : An observational study
CONCLUSION: The prediction of cardiovascular events was better with plaque burden measurements than with the PROCAM score. Treatment with statins in subjects with advanced carotid atherosclerosis (types III-IV b findings on ultrasound) significantly improved the prognosis in a nonrandomized observational study.PMID:37402837 | DOI:10.1007/s00059-023-05197-z

Investigation of Combined Carotid Endarterectomy and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery Outcomes and Adverse Event Risk Factors in the Vascular Quality Initiative
CONCLUSIONS: Combined CEA and CABG provides excellent long-term mortality prevention in patients with co-existing severe coronary and carotid atherosclerosis. Simultaneous CEA and CABG provides equivalent stroke prevention and long-term survival to both a cohort of patients undergoing coronary revascularization within 5 years of CEA and patients undergoing isolated CEA or CABG in the literature. The two most impactful modifiable risk factors towards long-term stroke and mortality prevention for patients undergoing simultaneous CEA-CABG are patch placement at CEA site and adherence to statin medication therapy.PMID:37303074...

Comparative Review of the Treatment Methodologies of Carotid Stenosis
Int J AngiolDOI: 10.1055/s-0035-1545073The treatment of carotid stenosis entails three methodologies, namely, medical management, carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS), as well as carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) and European Carotid Surgery Trial (ECST) have shown that symptomatic carotid stenosis greater than 70% is best treated with CEA. In asymptomatic patients with carotid stenosis greater than 60%, CEA was more beneficial than treatment with aspirin alone according to the Asymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis (ACAS) and Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Tr...

Cerebral embolism in the perioperative period in patients post invasive treatment of carotid artery stenosis. Does invasive treatment prevent cerebral embolism?
CONCLUSIONS: 1. Microembolic signals in the middle cerebral artery detected with the use of transcranial ultrasound examination in the early period after carotid revascularization of the internal carotid artery are usually asymptomatic. 2. Cerebral embolism in the early period after carotid revascularization is more frequently found inpatients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis subjected to a repair procedure. 3. The clinical significance of cerebral emboli found after carotid revascularization requires further research. PMID: 24846363 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
