Impact of moderate to severe renal impairment on long-term clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: Moderate to severe renal impairment is a poor prognostic factor of long-term clinical outcomes in AF patients. PMID: 27236240 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Registry of Japanese patients with atrial fibrillation focused on anticoagulant therapy in the new era: The RAFFINE registry study design and baseline characteristics.
CONCLUSION: The RAFFINE registry at baseline described the current status of anticoagulation therapy in Japan and long-term follow-up data will identify how outcomes vary between stratified groups in patients with AF in the DOAC era (UMIN Clinical Trials Registry UMIN000009617). Contemporary trend of reduced-dose non-vitamin K anticoagulants in Japanese patients with atrial fibrillation: A cross-sectional analysis of a multicenter outpatient registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Nearly half of the NOAC dose reductions in our registry were deemed "non-standardized," which were seen mostly in patients at significant risk for ischemic stroke. The physician's apprehension regarding excessive bleeding under NOAC use should be appropriately balanced with concern for an increased risk of embolic events. PMID: 30487057 [PubMed - in process]

De novo atrial fibrillation as an independent prognostic marker after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: Results from the RIMA registry.
CONCLUSION: De novo AF was independently associated with 1-year cardiovascular mortality. It should not be considered as an intercurrent event of STEMI, but rather as a strong prognostic marker. PMID: 31079915 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

B-type natriuretic peptide and outcome in patients with apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: Measuring BNP may help stratify the risk of HCM-related adverse outcome in apical HCM patients. PMID: 32439341 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prognostic value of B-type natriuretic peptide and its amino-terminal proBNP fragment for cardiovascular events with stratification by renal function.
CONCLUSIONS: Both BNP and NT-proBNP are useful biomarkers for mortality and cardiovascular events, but NT-proBNP may be superior to BNP for CKD stages 4-5. PMID: 23618914 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Supplemental benefit of an angiotensin receptor blocker in hypertensive patients with stable heart failure using olmesartan (SUPPORT) trial-Rationale and design.
CONCLUSIONS: The SUPPORT trial will elucidate the supplemental benefits of an ARB, olmesartan, in hypertensive patients with CHF. PMID: 23769179 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Detection of mutations in symptomatic patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Taiwan.
CONCLUSIONS: We identified 13 HCM pedigrees, including 5 carrying novel mutations and 1 with a double mutation. The three most commonly mutated genes were MYH7, MYBPC3, and TNNT2. These results, together with genetic counseling, could lead to earlier diagnosis and better management of family members at risk of HCM. PMID: 25086479 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of the Mehran risk score for the prediction of clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention.
CONCLUSION: MRS might provide potentially useful information for prediction of CI-AKI and clinical outcomes after PCI. PMID: 25623482 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of human atrial natriuretic peptide on myocardial performance and energetics in heart failure due to previous myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to SNP, the ANP-dependent increase in cGMP may ameliorate myocardial inotropy and energetics in HF. PMID: 25722046 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Gender differences in the association between serum uric acid and prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: An increased level of UA was associated with MACE more strongly in women than in men with ACS. These results suggest that there are gender differences in the association of UA level with the prognosis in patients with ACS. PMID: 26228000 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparative effectiveness of antiarrhythmic drugs for rhythm control of atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: Compared with dronedarone, amiodarone, class 1C agents, and sotalol are more effective for rhythm control, while dofetilide had similar efficacy. These findings have important implications for clinical practice. PMID: 26233885 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Activation of microglia within paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus is NOT involved in maintenance of established hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS: Activated microglia with morphological alteration within PVN are not involved in the maintenance of established severe hypertension, and inflammation within PVN could not be the therapeutic target of established hypertension. PMID: 26874752 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Total management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Abstract Patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) often have multiple comorbid conditions that may interact with each other, confound the choice of treatments, and reduce mortality. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most important comorbidities of CVD, which causes serious consequences in patients with ischemic heart disease, stroke, arrhythmia, and heart failure. COPD shares common risk factors such as tobacco smoking and aging with CVD, is associated with less physical activity, and produces systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. Overall, patients with COPD have a 2-3-fold increas...
