Reduction in saturated fat intake for cardiovascular disease
Health guidance suggests that reducing the amount of saturated fat we eat, by cutting down on animal fats, is good for our health. In the process of updating this review the authors wanted to know whether following this advice leads to a reduced risk of dying or getting cardiovascular disease (heart disease or stroke). They assessed the effect of replacing animal fats and hard vegetable fats with plant oils, unsaturated spreads or starchy foods, for at least two years, on health outcomes including dying, heart disease and stroke. They only looked at studies of adults (18 years or older). They included men and women with a...

Featured Review: Mediterranean-style diet for the prevention of cardiovascular disease
In this Q&A we asked the lead author Professor Saverio Stranges from Western University Canada to explain more about the mediterranean diet and its role in preventing cardiovascular disease following the publication of aCochrane Review on this topic. What makes a diet ‘Mediterranean’?Scientific interest in the traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern originated in the 1960s because of the observation that populations in countries of the Mediterranean region, such as Greece and Italy, had lower mortality from cardiovascular disease compared with northern European populations or the US, probably as a result of diff...

Evaluating Methods for Intersectoral Comparison of Quality of Care. A Routine Data Analysis of Elective Percutaneous Coronary Interventions.
Conclusions: The analysis revealed that the adjusted risk for complications following an elective PCI is similar between the inpatient and the outpatient setting. For mortality the risk differed but this might be explained by residual or unmeasured confounding. The different methods applied in this study revealed mostly similar results. Since our study only covered one aspect of quality of care in the field of PCI and did not consider drug treatment in hospital or in the outpatient setting, further studies are needed which include these aspects. Use of IndiGO individualized clinical guidelines in primary care.
CONCLUSIONS: IndiGO individualized clinical guidelines were successfully implemented in primary care and were associated with increases in the use of cardioprotective medications and reduction in the predicted risk of adverse events, suggesting that a larger trial could be warranted. Omega-3 fatty acids for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease
In this interview with Dr. Lee Hooper we find out more about this new Cochrane review -Omega-3 fatty acids for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseaseTell us about this Cochrane ReviewThere is a great deal of public belief in the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fats.   Intakes of long-chain omega-3 fats in the US are higher from dietary supplements than foods.  But public health advice differs across countries. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence in the UK encourages people to eat oily fish intake (the major source of long-chain omega-3 f ats) but discourages supplementatio...

Text messaging patients reduces heart attack, stroke, smoking
Benefits to exercise, smoking cessation, and weight loss are well understood by patients and hospitals alike. What has been traditionally more difficult to pinpoint, however, are techniques to make those lifestyle modifications happen.   Among the software and tools being tested to trigger such changes, the simple practice of texting targeted reminders to patients has shown a certain degree of optimistic meddle. PROSIT Open Source Disease Models for Diabetes Mellitus.
Authors: Schramm W, Sailer F, Pobiruchin M, Weiss C Abstract UNLABELLED: There has been legitimate criticism with regard to the quality and the transparency of health economic modelling studies. For that reason, the aim of the PROSIT Disease Modelling Community is to develop transparent open source health economic disease models for diabetes mellitus. RESULTS: Markov type models were developed in the open source spread sheet software OpenOffice Calc for myocardial infarction, stroke, retinopathy, nephropathy, diabetic foot syndrome, and hypoglycemia. The basic concept is to describe a disease as a cascade of di...

Heart disease classification using hybridized Ruzzo-Tompa memetic based deep trained Neocognitron neural network
AbstractAccording to the survey 17.5 million deaths are happened due to the cardiovascular disease that leads to create heart attack, chest pain and stroke. Based on the survey it clearly concludes that most of the people affected by heart problem that need to be identified in the earlier stage for eliminating the future risk in patient health. The importance of the heart disease detection process helps to create the earlier detection system for identifying heart problem by using machine learning and optimized techniques but the developed forecasting systems are difficult to predict the heart problems in an accurate manner...

Podcast: Pharmacotherapy for hypertension in adults 60 years or older
One of the earliest Cochrane Reviews on high blood pressure was first published in 1998, investigating treatments for the elderly. It was substantively updated for a second time in June 2019 and we asked the lead author, Vijaya Musini, from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada to tell us about the evidence.High blood pressure or hypertension, which is defined as systolic blood pressure of 140 mm of mercury or more, or diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm of mercury or more, increases with age, particularly in those over 60. It raises the risk of heart attack and stroke, with systolic hypertension, which is m...
