A Retrospective Study of Stroke in Women Compared to Men in Outcome and Readmission Causes (P1.216)
Conclusion:This study is among the first to discuss stroke in minority population in the Middle East. We did not identify sex as an important determinant of outcome after an acute ischemic stroke in this study.Disclosure: Dr. AlShaer has nothing to disclose. Dr. Khoja has nothing to disclose. Comparison of Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)-Related Stroke to the General Stroke Population: Associations with In-Hospital Mortality (P1.223)
Conclusions: Ischemic stroke in patients with VAD is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Although both older patients and women comprised a smaller percentage of VADWS than in the general stroke population, there was no age or sex association with mortality. While pre-existing CAD was more prevalent in VADWS, these patients had lower in-hospital mortality, possibly suggesting an additional unidentified subset with high mortality. Further study is needed to explore the associations between age, sex, and CAD in patients with VAD and ischemic stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Peters has nothing to disclose. Dr. Singh has nothing...

From 'Sweet Clover Disease' to NOACs: A Historical Perspective on Oral Anticoagulation for Prevention of Cardioembolic Stroke (P2.397)
CONCLUSIONS: Warfarin, born from ‘sweet clover disease’ and humble beginnings as rodenticide, has been the cornerstone of cardioembolic stroke prevention. Its shortcomings inspired the development of a new generation of oral anticoagulants.Disclosure: Dr. Chiota-McCollum has nothing to disclose.

Obesity Paradox in Patients Hospitalized for Acute Ischemic Stroke: An Analysis of Nationwide Inpatient Sample Data (S47.008)
Conclusions: Among patients hospitalized for AIS, obese patients had lower risk adjusted in-hospital mortality. Similar trend persisted among IV-tpa and non IV-tpa group. The association of obesity and better prognosis, also known as the "obesity paradox" holds true for AIS. This is the first study of its kind on the largest all payer database. However, further studies are required to establish causal relationship for this phenomenon.Disclosure: Dr. Lunagariya has nothing to disclose. Dr. Patel has nothing to disclose. Predictors of In-Hospital Ischemic Stroke During Acute Myocardial Infarction Hospitalizations (P6.043)
CONCLUSIONS: The higher association of increasing age, sex and race with Ischemic stroke is depicted. The patients who undergo by-pass graft procedure are more likely to develop stroke. Therefore, further studies are warranted for improved risk stratification in AMI patients.Disclosure: Dr. Shah has nothing to disclose. Dr. Patel has nothing to disclose. Natural History of Extracranial Carotid Stenosis in Asian Stroke Patients- A Retrospective Study (P1.182)
Conclusions- Symptomatic steno-occlusive disease of cervical carotid artery carries a high risk of subsequent vascular events and mortality despite best medical therapy. Perhaps, better methods of risk stratification and an aggressive approach towards revascularisation in eligible cases are warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Chandra has nothing to disclose. Elevated FVIII Predicts Subsequent Acute Ischemic Stroke in Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack (S42.004)
CONCLUSIONS: In our sample, eFVIII was associated with increased risk of a subsequent AIS admission. These findings may indicate a greater risk for other future thrombotic events in post-TIA patients with eFVIII and begs the question as to optimal antithrombotic therapy in this population.Disclosure: Dr. Semmes has nothing to disclose. Household Secondhand Smoke Exposure Confers Higher Stroke Risk and Poorer Stroke Prognosis (S42.005)
CONCLUSIONS: Household SHS is associated with a 1.5-fold increase in stroke risk and a 2-fold increase in mortality after stroke among never-smokers. While prospective studies are needed to assess causality, this study highlights the importance of obtaining SHS exposure history and counseling patients and their families on the potential impact of SHS on post-stroke outcomes.Disclosure: Dr. Lin has nothing to disclose. Shared genetic susceptibility of vascular-related biomarkers with ischemic and recurrent stroke
Conclusions: Our data identify a genetic contribution to inflammatory and hemostatic biomarkers in a stroke population. Additionally, our results suggest shared genetic contributions to circulating CRP levels measured poststroke and risk for incident and recurrent ischemic stroke. These data broaden our understanding of genetic contributors to biomarker variation and ischemic stroke risk, which should be useful in clinical risk evaluation.

Long-term use of daily sumatriptan injections in severe drug-resistant chronic cluster headache
Chronic cluster headache (CCH) is a rare but severely debilitating condition.1 Some patients have drug-resistant CCH and continue to have daily attacks using abortive agents for long periods many times per day, mainly subcutaneous sumatriptan (SS).2 According to pharmaceutical company indications, the maximum SS dosage is 2 injections (12 mg) per day but these patients often use more. This limitation appears reasonable because of single case reports of cardiac arrest attributable to SS vasoconstrictive properties.3,4 Usually these events occur at the initial administration, and an underlying occult coronary artery disease ...

Risk of stroke in retinal vein occlusion
Conclusions: The present study provides new evidence that patients with incident RVO are at increased risk of stroke just after RVO occurrence. Immediate risk evaluation and proper treatment of stroke risk factors in patients with RVO are needed to reduce stroke-related mortality and morbidity.
