Causal effects of cardiovascular risk factors on onset of major age-related diseases: A time-to-event Mendelian randomization study.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight the involvement of BMI in the development of multiple age-related diseases. We found that some observed causal associations can attribute to pleiotropic effects of some genetic variations. These findings have important implications in unraveling causal effects of common risk factors on age-related diseases and guiding effective intervention strategies to reduce the incidence of these diseases. Depression, Vascular Factors, and Risk of Dementia in Primary Care: A Retrospective Cohort Study
ConclusionDepression in later life increases the risk of dementia. The effect is particularly high in individuals with depression and vascular disorders. Targeting late‐onset depression in individuals with vascular disorders might lower dementia risk by preventing cerebrovascular changes.

Efficacy of Aspirin in the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer in the Elderly: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Korea
ConclusionAspirin reduced the risks of MACCE and cancer without increasing the bleeding risk in elderly Koreans with hypertension, T2DM, or dyslipidemia. Moreover, the benefits of the long-term use of aspirin in reducing the risks of MACCE were demonstrated. However, the decision of using aspirin for primary prevention must be carefully made on an individual basis, while estimating the benefit –risk balance of aspirin.

Comorbidity status of deceased COVID-19 in-patients in Italy
CONCLUSION: In those deceased in-hospital due to COVID-19 in Italy, disease combinations defined by multiple cardio-respiratory, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric diseases occur more frequently than expected. This finding indicates a need to investigate the possible role of these clinical profiles in the chain of events that lead to death in individuals who have contracted SARS-CoV-2.PMID:34169447 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-021-01914-y

Diabetes and factors associated with cognitive and functional decline. The screening for CKD among older people across Europe (SCOPE) study
CONCLUSION: Decline in functional and cognitive status of community-dwelling older adults with DM was similar to participants without DM in a short period of 2 years of follow-up, though several clinical factors may increase its risk in this population.PMID:37668841 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02536-2

Proteomic Analysis of Mature Adipocytes from Obese Patients in Relation to Aging.
In conclusion, proteomic analysis of subcutaneous adipose tissue reveals differences in the abundance of proteins in adipocytes isolated from young vs. old individuals. These differentially abundant proteins are involved in the regulation of apoptosis, cellular senescence and inflammatory response. All these are common pathologic events in both obesity and aging. Linking social capital and mortality in the elderly: A Swedish national cohort study.
CONCLUSION: There are associations between low linking social capital and mortality from chronic disorders and suicide in the elderly population. Community support for elderly people living in neighborhoods with low levels of linking social capital may need to be strengthened. PMID: 24632181 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

One‐Year Mortality in Elderly Adults with Non‐ST‐Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome: Effect of Diabetic Status and Admission Hyperglycemia
ConclusionIn elderly adults with NSTEACS, diabetes mellitus and hyperglycemia on admission are associated with higher mortality, mostly because of preexisting cardiovascular and renal damage.

Disassociation of verbal learning and hippocampal volume in type 2 diabetes and major depression
ConclusionsThe relationship between hippocampal volume and performance on the California Verbal Learning Test is decoupled in subjects with type 2 diabetes and major depression and this decoupling may contribute to poor verbal learning and memory performance in this study population. Multiple Chronic Conditions in Older Adults with Acute Coronary Syndromes
Older adults presenting with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) often have multiple chronic conditions (MCCs). In addition to traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (ie, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes), common CV comorbidities include heart failure, stroke, and atrial fibrillation, whereas prevalent non-CV comorbidities include chronic kidney disease, anemia, depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The presence of MCCs affects the presentation (eg, increased frequency of type 2 myocardial infarctions [MIs]), clinical course, and prognosis of ACS in older adults. In general, higher comorbidity ...

Evaluation of serum lipid profile, body mass index, and waistline in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Conclusion: The present study shows for the first time that low levels of HDL-C, high levels of TG, and abnormal levels in BMI and waistline increase the risk of type 2 T2DM in Chinese people. Keywords: risk assessment, body mass index, waistline, HDL-C, TG, T2DM
