Complementary and alternative treatments for migraine
Abstract: Patients love complementary and alternative treatments! Most colleagues spend a significant amount of time discussing the benefit and the risk of these therapies. Fortunately, there is scientific evidence for or against the efficacy of several such therapeutic approaches. Knowing the evidence helps to facilitate the therapeutic process, especially when dealing with patients with chronic headache. Behavioral approaches, such as cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation techniques, and biofeedback, are supported by evidence (which is partly outdated), but require a significant amount of time. Physiotherapy and aerobic...

Physician practicing preferences for conventional or homeopathic medicines in elderly subjects with musculoskeletal disorders in the EPI3-MSD cohort.
CONCLUSION: NSAID use was significantly higher in elderly MSD patients consulting a conventional practice general practitioner. In contrast, analgesic use and MSD evolution were similar in the three groups. Consulting a homeopathic physician for MSD management does not appear to represent a loss of therapeutic opportunity, and decreases the use of NSAIDs. PMID: 25298739 [PubMed]

Impact of conflicts of interest on guideline recommendations : Empirical study within the second update of the German interdisciplinary S3 guidelines on fibromyalgia syndrome.
CONCLUSION: Academic COI were more frequent than financial COI in the second update of the German interdisciplinary guidelines group on fibromyalgia syndrome. The impact of COI on guideline recommendations was low. The inclusion of patients and of all relevant healthcare professionals into a guidelines group is a protective factor against the influence of COI on guideline recommendations. Complementary and alternative medicine use by pediatric oncology patients before, during, and after treatment
CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of CAM use and the different trends of use during the oncology care pathway and afterward underline the need to increase communication about CAM in the pediatric oncology setting, notably regarding benefits and risks of interaction with oncology treatment.PMID:33736643 | DOI:10.1186/s12906-021-03271-9

Complementary and alternative medicine-An option for chronic pain patients?
Schmerz. 2023 May 8. doi: 10.1007/s00482-023-00719-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe interest of patients with chronic pain in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is high. The aim of an accompanying complementary therapy is to strengthen the patient's self-efficacy, the ability to make decisions and the autonomy. The best evidence exists for physical activity and a balanced diet. Exercise combinations of strength and endurance as well as targeted strengthening of the muscles in the area of the pain are particularly suitable. When choosing the form of exercise, low-threshold training options are recommended. The...

Complementary and supplementary procedures in the treatment of headache
Schmerz. 2023 Jul 11. doi: 10.1007/s00482-023-00738-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn Germany, headache is one of the illnesses that most frequently leads to health impairments and to consultation with physicians. Even in children, headache is often associated with restricted activities of daily life. Nevertheless, the level of care for headache disorders is disproportionate to the medical needs. As a result, patients regularly use complementary and supportive therapeutic procedures. This review shows the procedures currently used for primary headache in childhood and adulthood, the methodological approaches and existing...
