A preliminary exploration of the feasibility of offering men information about potential prostate cancer treatment options before they know their biopsy results
Conclusions: In this small sample offering pre-biopsy education about potential treatment options was generally well received by patients, appeared to be beneficial to men who went on to be diagnosed, and did not appear to increase anxiety unnecessarily among those who had a negative biopsy.

A Tailored Prostate Cancer Education Intervention for Low-income African Americans: Impact on Knowledge and Screening.
Abstract Abstract:African American men bear disproportionate burden of prostate cancer (PCa) that can be reduced by early detection. A 15-minute culturally appropriate PCa education intervention developed to communicate effective, relevant, and balanced PCa screening information to low-income African American men was evaluated in men 42 years and older who had not been screened in one year. Of 539 men enrolled, 392 (72.7%) completed the six-month follow-up. Mean age was 54.4±8.9, 34.7% had no high school diploma, and 65.3% earned less than $25,000 annually. Barriers to screening included health in...

Weekly Web Review in Toxicology #3

Neruda’s death in 1973 occurred less than 2 weeks after a coup d’etat in Chile deposed Socialist President Salvador Allende and installed a right-wing dictatorship led by Augusto Pinohcet. The death was officially attributed to prostate cancer at the time, but recent allegations have raised the possibility of poisoning. This week, Neruda’s remains were exhumed for testing. Nature’s corresponde...

Fostering informed decisions: A randomized controlled trial assessing the impact of a decision aid among men registered to undergo mass screening for prostate cancer
Abstract: Objective: Screening asymptomatic men for prostate cancer is controversial and informed decision making is recommended. Within two prostate cancer screening programs, we evaluated the impact of a print-based decision aid (DA) on decision-making outcomes. Methods: Men (N=543) were 54.9 (SD=8.1) years old and 61% were African-American. The 2(booklet type: DA vs. usual care (UC))×2(delivery mode: Home vs. Clinic) randomized controlled trial assessed decisional and screening outcomes at baseline, 2-months, and 13-months.Results: Intention-to-treat linear regression analyses using generalized estimating equations reve...
