A Case of Acute Leukemia Following Remission of COVID-19 Infection; an Urge to Search for a Probable Association
Arch Acad Emerg Med. 2021 Jul 24;9(1):e51. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTMany aspects of Covid-19 infection, especially its complications and long-term health consequences are still unknown. Several reports concerning concomitant covid-19 infection and hematological disorders have been published recently. We aim to present a unique case of acute myeloid leukemia in a 61-year-old man with a previous history of covid-19 infection 40 days ago, with near complete resolution of signs and symptoms attributable to covid-19 infection. After 3 weeks, the patient presented again with progressive weakness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric...

A young woman with proptosis
A 31-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to our ophthalmic oncology outpatient clinic with a 4-week history of right eye proptosis, bifrontal pressure like headaches and blurred vision in the right eye. The patient denied diplopia or facial numbness. Review of systems was positive for recent nasal congestion and cough. Past medical history included inflammatory bowel syndrome, hypercholesterolaemia, asthma and acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL) at the age of 6 years. She had been in remission since 1987 following treatment with chemotherapy (cytarabine, daunorubicin, hydrocortisone, L-asparaginase, methotrexate, vinc...

Treating acute myeloid leukemia in older adults.
This article discusses how performance status, comorbidities, disease characteristics, quality of life concerns, and long-term treatment goals affect the selection of appropriate therapy for older adults with AML. Risks and benefits of each treatment approach based on the most recent medical literature are discussed. Finally, a treatment algorithm summarizing these data and incorporating geriatric assessment and molecular and cytogenetic markers predictive of therapeutic response is proposed to aid in the clinical decision-making process. Severe dyspnoea in a patient with chronic myelogenous leukaemia on a tyrosine kinase inhibitor
NR (Haematology fellow): A 78-year-old male patient with chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) diagnosed initially in 2011 presented to the haematology clinic with fatigue and dyspnoea at rest and with exertion. His medical history included benign prostatic hyperplasia and a prior diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) with translocation 8;21 (good risk AML) diagnosed in 2009, which was in complete remission after standard cytarabine and daunorubicin induction chemotherapy and cytarabine consolidation chemotherapy, requiring no treatment since January 2010. He had also been a smoker, with a 40 pack-year smoking histo...

Treatment of older patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Authors: Gökbuget N Abstract The treatment of older patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is an unmet medical need. With increasing age, ALL patients have a significantly lower clinical remission rate, higher early mortality, higher relapse rate, and poorer survival compared with younger patients. This is only partly explained by a higher incidence of poor prognostic factors in the older age group. Most importantly, intensive chemotherapy with or without stem cell transplantation (SCT) is less well tolerated in older patients. Some progress has been made with delivering age-adapted, moderately intensive...
