Interventional Treatment Methods for Ureteral Complications After Kidney Transplant: A Single-Center Experience
CONCLUSIONS: Ureteral complications after kidney transplant can be successfully treated with interventional methods in experienced centers without the need for surgery.PMID:37698400 | DOI:10.6002/ect.2023.0236

Ootheca mantidis mitigates renal fibrosis in mice by the suppression of apoptosis via increasing the gut microbe Akkermansia muciniphila and modulating glutamine metabolism
In this study, we demonstrated the dose-dependent attenuation of RIF by Ootheca mantidis (SPX), a commonly prescribed TCM for CKD, in a mouse model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). RNA-sequencing analysis suggested that SPX treatment prominently downregulated apoptosis and inflammation-associated pathways, thereby inhibiting the fibrogenic signaling in the kidney. We further found that transplantation of fecal microbiota from SPX-treated mice conferred protection against renal injury and fibrosis through suppressing apoptosis in UUO mice, indicating that SPX ameliorated RIF via remodeling the gut microbiota and re...

Horseshoe Kidney: 500 Years From the First Report in the Literature
Exp Clin Transplant. 2023 Jun;21(Suppl 2):49-52. doi: 10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.12.ABSTRACTHorseshoe kidney or ren arcuatus is the most common renal fusion anomaly, with an incidence of 1:500 in the normal population and a male predominance of 2:1. In >90% of cases, the fusion occurs along the inferior pole. It may vary in location, orientation, and arterial and venous anatomy. In 1522, Berengario da Carpi described this renal malformation for the first time in his masterpiece "Isagogae breves" (Introduction to Anatomy). He reported the results of a postmortem examination in the public autopsy room of the University of B...

Interstitial Nephritis: Wherefrom, Wherein, and Whereto
Exp Clin Transplant. 2023 Jun;21(Suppl 2):42-45. doi: 10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.10.ABSTRACTAbnormalities of the renal interstitium were noted early while identifying chronic kidney disease in 1827; however, interest in glomerular and vascular lesions was then distracted from their further study. As a complication of scarlet fever, interstitial lesions attracted attention in 1859 and came to be defined as acute interstitial nephritis in 1898. The chronic form of interstitial nephritis was traditionally attributed to pyelonephritis until the advent of kidney biopsy in the 1950s, when interstitial lesions were recognized as an...

Ureterocalicostomy Using Native Ureter in an Allograft Kidney: A Case Report
Exp Clin Transplant. 2023 Apr;21(4):361-364. doi: 10.6002/ect.2023.0064.ABSTRACTUreteral obstruction is the most common complication of renal transplant. It is managed through minimal invasive procedures or open surgeries. Herein, we report the procedure and clinical outcomes of a case of ureterocalicostomy with lower pole nephrectomy in a patient with extensive ureteral stricture after renal transplant. Based on our search, there are 4 cases of ureterocalicostomy in allograft kidney in the literature, and only 1 of these included the application of partial nephrectomy. We offer this rarely applied option for those cases w...
