Monitoring, prophylaxis, and treatment of infections in patients with MM receiving bispecific antibody therapy: consensus recommendations from an expert panel
Blood Cancer J. 2023 Aug 1;13(1):116. doi: 10.1038/s41408-023-00879-7.ABSTRACTBispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are emerging as an important novel class of immunotherapeutic agents for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), and are set to be more widely used in clinical practice. However, this new class of therapies is associated with a distinct adverse event (AE) profile that includes cytokine release syndrome and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome, as well as AEs leading to increased infection risk such as cytopenias and hypogammaglobulinemia, and infections themselves. As preliminary data with this clas...

Gastrointestinal tract and viral pathogens
World J Virol. 2023 Jun 25;12(3):136-150. doi: 10.5501/wjv.v12.i3.136.ABSTRACTViral gastroenteritis is the most common viral illness that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, causing inflammation and irritation of the lining of the stomach and intestines. Common signs and symptoms associated with this condition include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dehydration. The infections commonly involved in viral gastroenteritis are rotavirus, norovirus, and adenovirus, which spread through the fecal-oral and contact routes and cause non-bloody diarrhea. These infections can affect both immunocompetent and immunocompromised indiv...

Combination Therapy for the Treatment of Shingles with an Immunostimulatory Vaccine Virus and Acyclovir
Pharmaceuticals (Basel). 2023 Feb 1;16(2):226. doi: 10.3390/ph16020226.ABSTRACTPractically the entire global population is infected by herpesviruses that establish lifelong latency and can be reactivated. Alpha-herpesviruses, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 (HSV-1/HSV-2) and varicella zoster virus (VZV), establish latency in sensory neurons and then reactivate to infect epithelial cells in the mucosa or skin, resulting in a vesicular rash. Licensed antivirals inhibit virus replication, but do not affect latency. On reactivation, VZV causes herpes zoster, also known as shingles. The 76-year-old first author of this paper pub...

Application of Cell Penetrating Peptides as a Promising Drug Carrier to Combat Viral Infections
Mol Biotechnol. 2023 Jan 31. doi: 10.1007/s12033-023-00679-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNovel effective drugs or therapeutic vaccines have been already developed to eradicate viral infections. Some non-viral carriers have been used for effective drug delivery to a target cell or tissue. Among them, cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) attracted a special interest to enhance drug delivery into the cells with low toxicity. They were also applied to transfer peptide/protein-based and nucleic acids-based therapeutic vaccines against viral infections. CPPs-conjugated drugs or vaccines were investigated in several viral infectio...

Virus-CKB 2.0: Viral-Associated Disease-Specific Chemogenomics Knowledgebase
ACS Omega. 2022 Oct 10;7(42):37476-37484. doi: 10.1021/acsomega.2c04258. eCollection 2022 Oct 25.ABSTRACTTransmissible and infectious viruses can cause large-scale epidemics around the world. This is because the virus can constantly mutate and produce different variants and subvariants to counter existing treatments. Therefore, a variety of treatments are urgently needed to keep up with the mutation of the viruses. To facilitate the research of such treatment, we updated our Virus-CKB 1.0 to Virus-CKB 2.0, which contains 10 kinds of viruses, including enterovirus, dengue virus, hepatitis C virus, Zika virus, herpes simplex...

Atherosclerosis by Virus Infection-A Short Review
Biomedicines. 2022 Oct 19;10(10):2634. doi: 10.3390/biomedicines10102634.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis manifests by the thickening of artery walls and their narrowed channels through the accumulation of plaque. It is one of the most important indicators of cardiovascular disease. It can be caused by various factors, such as smoking, a high cholesterol diet, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and genetic factors. However, atherosclerosis can also develop due to infection. It has been reported that some bacteria and viruses can cause the development of atherosclerosis. Examples of these viruses are influenza viruses, herpes viruses, hep...

An Orally Administered Nonpathogenic Attenuated Vaccine Virus Can Be Used to Control SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Complementary Plan B to COVID-19 Vaccination
Conclusions SIT has already been demonstrated to be safe and effective against five different families of viruses, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, SARS-CoV-2, and herpes zoster virus. The R903/78 drug candidate is simple to manufacture and easy to administer in an outpatient setting. The expected cost of SIT will be affordable even in resource-limited countries.PMID:36176842 | PMC:PMC9511982 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.28467

Sensitive and specific serological ELISA for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 infections
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the N-protein-based ELISA developed here is well suited for the sensitive and specific serological detection of SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG antibodies in human serum for symptomatic infections. It may also prove useful to identify previous SARS-CoV-2 infections in vaccinated people, as all currently approved vaccines rely on the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S-) protein.PMID:35305688 | DOI:10.1186/s12985-022-01768-4

Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic Response on Service Provision for Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV, and Viral Hepatitis, England
Emerg Infect Dis. 2022 Mar;28(3):739-742. doi: 10.3201/eid2803.211998.ABSTRACTSince the coronavirus disease pandemic response began in March 2020, tests, vaccinations, diagnoses, and treatment initiations for sexual health, HIV, and viral hepatitis in England have declined. The shift towards online and outreach services happened rapidly during 2020 and highlights the need to evaluate the effects of these strategies on health inequalities.PMID:35202537 | DOI:10.3201/eid2803.211998
