New head of U.S. aid program for HIV/AIDS vows to refocus attention on the other, ‘silent’ pandemic
On 13 June, John Nkengasong, 58, was appointed the first African-born head of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that helps more than 50 countries respond to their HIV/AIDS epidemics. Nkengasong, who grew up in Cameroon and became a U.S. citizen in 2007, previously ran the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
PEPFAR is credited with helping save more than 20 million lives since its inception in 2003. It had a $10.7 billion budget in 2021, more than half of it spent on HIV treatment and care. The agency has relied on an acting director since Deborah Birx...

Virtual recruitment and participant engagement for substance use research during a pandemic
Purpose of review
The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic resulted in cataclysmic changes to the research enterprise, causing a forced shutdown or rapid pivot to virtual methods. Adapting studies to the virtual environment also impacted recruitment and retention strategies. This review elucidated challenges and offered pragmatic recommendations, drawing on published literature and our prior work, to assist researchers in re-evaluating and amending best-practice techniques to bolster inclusive recruitment and study engagement of people using substances, particularly for virtual interviews or focus groups.

Parent satisfaction with the parent-provider partnership and therapy service delivery for children with disabilities during COVID-19: Associations with sociodemographic variables.
This study explored the relationship between sociodemographic factors and parents’ satisfaction with therapies for children with disabilities during COVID-19. Method: Two hundred seven parents of children with disabilities completed an online survey battery that included the Family-Provider Partnership Scale and sociodemographic characteristics and assessed their satisfaction with their child[ren]’s therapies during COVID-19. Hospital and Community Skilled Nursing Partnership for Monoclonal Antibody Treatment During the Novel Coronavirus Pandemic
This study examines two collaborative pilots, both focused on the administration of monoclonal antibody (MAB) treatment in a skilled nursing facility (SNF), to reduce hospitalizations and deaths. The participating SNF is a 130 bed for-profit nursing home with an individual owner. The referring hospital is Baylor Scott& White Memorial Medical Center, a 635-bed non-profit tertiary hospital.

A Reflection on Impact
Some of you may have heard me quote a thoughtful essay by Daniel Shapiro and Kent Vrana (both of Pennsylvania State College of Medicine) that is critical of research institutions promoting what funds they’ve received over what scientific progress those funds have supported. The authors argue that instead of using a ranking system to measure success that favors number of grants and dollars, we should consider a new system that focuses on the efficiency by which the science was conducted and how the research contributes to answering questions that are meaningful to science.
