N of 1 studies – great examples
This study examined whether it’s more fruitful to expose people to many activities they’ve previously avoided, or instead, to limit the number of activities each person was exposed to. This is SUCH an important component of therapy where people have avoided doing things that bother them because they anticipate either that their pain will go to untolerable levels (or interfere with other important things like sleep) or because they’re worried they’ll do harm to themselves. Why? Because doing things in one safe space is not life. We do lots of activities in lots of different spaces, and most of them a...

From suffering to healing: the role of trauma in chronic pain
“Trauma is perhaps the most avoided, ignored, belittled, denied, misunderstood and untreated cause of human suffering.” – Peter Levine, PhD, Developer of Somatic Experiencing Therapy One frequent cause of treatment-resistant chronic pain is unresolved trauma, yet few health care providers and patients are aware of the connection, and, as a result, it is rarely addressed. The power of listening: a poem from a chronic pain patient to their doctor
Per the CDC, 11 to 40 percent of Americans struggle with chronic pain. All physicians must treat patients with chronic pain, whether they are spine surgeons or primary care physicians. It is a disease we can not escape.  We do not have a one-time pill to fix chronic pain. Unlike other diseases, we do not Read more… The power of listening: a poem from a chronic pain patient to their doctor originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

6 Healthcare Examples Of Virtual, Augmented And Mixed Reality
Lately, there has been a tendency in the tech world to adopt “new” realities in their midst. Meta has a branch dedicated to developing virtual reality (VR) hardware and software; earlier this year HTC unveiled its new augmented reality (AR) glasses; while Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch a mixed reality (MR) headset.  Collectively, VR, AR and MR fall under the umbrella term of extended reality (XR), which analysts believe holds the potential to be the next major computing platform. Such potentials have spillover effects into the medical field through digital health approaches, and healthcare practice is...

Lessons From a Ransomware Attack: The Importance of Partnership & Collaboration
The following is a guest article by John Gaede, Director of Information Systems at Sky Lakes Medical Center. Imagine a rural business is the victim of a cyberattack. A nefarious person or group convinces an unsuspecting employee to open an email promising a bonus. Within 12 hours, every piece of technology connected to that network, and every process needed to conduct daily operations, is paralyzed.  Now imagine that business is a hospital. It serves 80,000 people and it’s the only one within 10,000 square miles. Add to the scenario a global pandemic that is steadily ravaging the nation’s healthcare system. On October...

“ N-of-1 ” research – A clinically relevant research strategy!
I’ve been banging on about single case experimental research designs (SCED) ever since I studied with Prof Neville Blampied at University of Canterbury. Prof Blampied (now retired) was enthusiastic about this approach because it allows clinicians to scientifically test whether an intervention has an effect in an individual – but he took it further with a very cool graphical analysis that allows multiple cases to be studied and plotted using the modified Brinley Plot (Blampied, 2017), and I’ll be discussing it later in this series. Suffice to say, I love this approach to research because it allows clinicia...

Three Ways Enterprise Visibility and Automation Benefit Staff and the Patient Experience
The following is a guest article by Scott Hondros, Vice President of Professional Services at CenTrak. It’s often said that necessity is the mother of invention. This theory has been tested within the healthcare industry over the last few years as the COVID-19 pandemic aligned with, and expedited, the retirement of many employees in the Baby Boomer generation. Nearly 29 million Baby Boomers retired in 2020, three and a half million more than in 2019. While their increased retirement has been anticipated, the associated timing compounded staffing challenges within the healthcare industry and left leadership seeking soluti...

A man in his 60s with acute chest pain
Sent by anonymous, written by Pendell MeyersA man in his 60s presented with acute chest pain with diaphoresis. He had received aspirin and nitroglycerin by EMS, with some improvement. His vitals were within normal limits. Here is his triage ECG:2045:What do you think? The ECG is subtle, but diagnostic of infero-posterior OMI. The QRS is normal, yet in aVL the normal upright small QRS complex is followed by in appropriately large-volume T wave inversion, which is reciprocal to the T waves in lead III, which are probably hyperacute if compared to available baseline. Corroborating this is the subtle ST depression in V2-V3 whic...
