In 1872, two years after the University of Iowa medical school was founded, $500 for books was allocated to form the campus medical library. Fast forward nearly 100 years to the construction of what is now Hardin Library for the Health Sciences building (1974). In 2016 the University of Iowa and Hardin Library for the Health Sciences was awarded as the host site for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (2016-2021).
