Mosquito Virus May Have Caused Brain Damage In Thousands Of Babies
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — In the early weeks of Angelica Pereira's pregnancy, a mosquito bite began bothering her. At first it seemed a small thing. But the next day she awoke with a rash, a headache, a fever and a burning in her eyes. The symptoms disappeared within four days, but she fears the virus has left lasting consequences. Pereira's daughter Luiza was born in October with a head more than an inch (3 centimeters) below the range defined as healthy by doctors, a rare condition known as microcephaly that often results in mental retardation. A neurologist soon gave Pereira and her husband more bad news: The brain da...

Stop Should-ing on Yourself: 3 Tips to Peaceful Productivity
I am a recovering perfectionist. I lived 25+ miserable years striving for the approval and validation of others and it took quite a toll on my peace of mind, physical health and professional growth. Despite having a thriving career and all of the outer trappings of success, I was unhappy. More than that, I was desperately ready for my life to change. Mainly because I wasn't following my heart. I learned the hard way that I gave away my power when I looked for success through greater and greater achievement. Like other perfectionists in recovery, I eventually had to realize that my best was better than what others wanted o...

Dutee Chand Scores Important Victory For Hyperandrogenic Female Athletes
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — In a victory for individual athletes over governing bodies, sport's highest court has suspended IAAF rules governing women who have high levels of male hormones. The rules requiring some female athletes to get medical clearance were introduced in 2011, after South African 800-meter runner Caster Semenya was sidelined for almost a year after winning the 2009 world title when she was 18. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said Monday the world athletics body failed to prove that women with naturally high levels of testosterone had a competitive edge. "In the absence of such eviden...

Throwing a Lifeline for the High Seas
Recently at the United Nations in New York, countries laid the ground work for a major shift in how we manage our relationship with the ocean. It's an important moment that comes at a critical hour for conservation. After almost a decade of dialogue, workshops, and speeches, a resolution is about to be tabled at the General Assembly to begin negotiating a new agreement that would be the first of its kind; one that protects biodiversity in ocean areas beyond national jurisdiction, known as the high seas. This region, covering about 45% of the surface of the earth and 64% of the ocean, is an incubator of wondrously diverse...

Alain Ducasse, Michelin Starred Chef, Cooks Food For Astronauts To Eat In Space
French chef Alain Ducasse knows a lot about stars. He's become famous around the world for opening restaurants from Monaco to Hong Kong that have been showered with three-star ratings by the Michelin Red Guide. But Ducasse has also been serving food to a group of people who know a lot more about stars than he even does: astronauts. For the past couple of years, Ducasse and his team of chefs have been creating gourmet meals for consumption on the International Space Station. The dishes they make for NASA are a far cry from the chalky freeze-dried ice cream that most people associate with space food: served only on special...

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A Swiss solar-powered plane took off from Abu Dhabi early Monday, marking the start of the first attempt to fly around the world without a drop of fuel. Solar Impulse founder André Borschberg was at the controls of the single-seater when it took off from the Al Bateen Executive Airport. Borschberg will trade off piloting with Solar Impulse co-founder Bertrand Piccard during stop-overs on a journey that will take months to complete. The Swiss pilots say their aim is to create awareness about replacing "old polluting technologies with clean and efficient technologies." The plane is...
