eClinicalWorks Settlement Hasn ’t Led To Customer Defections, Yet
Loyalty is a funny thing. You’d think that when a vendor let you down spectacularly, you wouldn’t do business with them anymore. But the truth is, when it comes to health IT it’s not that simple. In many cases, vendor-customer relationships are more like marriages than formal agreements. Even if things start to go south, customers have so much invested in their vendor relationship that backing out may not seem like a realistic possibility. Yes, I’m pontificating here, but not without a point. What I’m responding to here is a recent KLAS survey which found that while many customers of the now-tarnished eClinic...

Patients Often Lukewarm about Patient Portals; Problems with Training?
Patient portals are an underused and unappreciated asset available as part of an EHR. I have blogged about them in the past (see:Next Step in Patient Portals: Secure Messaging and Administrative Functions;Publishing Test Results in Patient Portals: Holding a Tiger by the Tail). Below is an excerpt from a recent article suggesting that patient are"fed up" with them (see:GAO finds further proof patients are fed up with portals, EHRs): Despite the fact that close to 90 percent of providers participating in meaningful use offer their patients online access, only about one-third of patients actually log in...

Engagement Cartoon – Fun Friday
This week’s Fun Friday healthcare cartoon was shared by the Society for Participatory Medicine. If you don’t know about this organization, take a minute and go check out what they do and see how you can support them. You’ll see why they shared this cartoon. Dilbert's wisdom is spot on! #patientengagement #s4PM #ThursdayThoughts pic.twitter.com/MoHvg653FE — Participatory Med (@S4PM) July 27, 2017 Sadly, this is the experience of many patients with their doctors. The Society for Participatory Medicine has been working hard to change that mindset. We all need to support these efforts in our own ...

Health reform should simplify our health system. Here are some ideas.
We are a nation divided. Our two major political parties agree on essentially nothing. Republicans cannot agree even amongst themselves how to proceed on health care reform. It is demoralizing that even though U.S. health care has sunken to last among developed nations, our elected leaders are unable to envision or agree upon any effective solutions. We could all use a win. When it comes to health care reform, administrative simplification could provide that win. American health care is an administrative mess. Administrative costs are roughly double in the U.S. compared to other nations. Recent studies show that for every ...

This EHR Mess We ’ re In
MICHAEL CHEN, MD Dr. Matthew Hahn blogs about the current state of today’s EHR’s and rightly points out many of the same reasons that I have identified in my previous posts: The negative impact of Meaningful Use (MU) since 2009 Poor usability of EHR’s There are several other important concerns that have been left unanswered by our current Health IT offerings. Patient privacy and control of their health records Interoperability Government Pipedream? The solution Dr. Hahn proposed is one that hinges on the hope that government will abandon MU (unlikely given this political climate), and create a whole new EHR dev...

Hospitals Aren ’t Getting Much ROI From RCM Technology
If your IT investments aren’t paying off, your revenue cycle management process is clunky and consumers are defaulting on their bills, you’re in a pretty rocky situation financially. Unfortunately, that’s just the position hospitals find themselves in lately, according to a new study. The study, which was conducted by the Healthcare Financial Management Association and Navigant, surveyed 125 hospital health system chief financial officers and revenue cycle executives. When they looked at the data, researchers saw that hospitals are being hit with a double whammy. On the one hand, the RCM systems hospitals have in pla...

Regulatory Capture Tests the New Administration
By ADRIAN GROPPER, MD The bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act charges HHS / ONC to deal with two issues that previous laws (HIPAA and HITECH) and the Obama HHS left in-progress: information blocking and longitudinal health records. ONC needs to deal with these two issues at a time when there are calls to delay or rescind some Meaningful Use regulations, in an administration that does not favor regulations, with some vendors already starting to ship Meaningful Use Stage 3 EHR products, and while the budget for ONC is still undetermined. ONC can’t be too careful. Judging by the agenda, the July 24 21st Century Cures Act Trus...

Patients and “Their” Medical Records: Crossing the Chasm
This blog was originally published by Health Populi on July 17. Most physician practices and hospitals in the U.S. have installed electronic health records (EHRs). But in a classic Field of Dreams scenario, we have made patients’ medical records digital, but people aren’t asking for them or accessing them en masse. “How do we make it easier for patients to request and manage their own data?” asks a report from the Office of the National Coordinator of Health IT (ONC), Improving the Health Records Request Process for Patients – Highlights from User Experience Research. The ONC has been responsible for implemen...

Inexact Sciences
Thoughts on the place of science in an era of false convictionSome recent articles, noted by a few of us in journals regularly monitored byHCR bloggers, provide real food for thought in our New World Order of alternate facts, fake news and truthiness. In a recent number of the still intrepidly pay-wall-free Guardian,  development economist John Rapleysummarizeshis new bookTwilight of the Money Gods. This summary is the best we in the colonies can do until this month ' s UK publication of the full volume makes it to our shores. Is Your Revenue Cycle Suffering? – Breakaway Thinking
This post is part of the Breakaway Thinking blog post series which is sponsored by Breakaway Learning Solutions, a Conduent Company. Healthcare and specifically healthcare IT seems to be full of distractions. There has always been a lot of regulations in healthcare, but lately, it seems overwhelming. We’re just coming out of one of the most overwhelming distractions to hit healthcare, meaningful use. However, just behind it is MACRA. If you’re part of any healthcare IT organization, you are certainly all too familiar with the impact these regulations have had on your organization. While each of these regulation...

Reflections on the US HIT Policy Trajectory
I ’m in China this week, meeting with government, academia, and industry leaders in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou.  The twelve hour time difference means that I can work a day in China, followed by a day in Boston.  For the next 7 days, I ’ll truly be living on both sides of the planet.I recently delivered this policy update about the key developments in healthcare IT policy and sentiment over the past 90 days.I ’ve not written a specific summary of the recently released Quality Patient Program proposed rule which provides the detailed regulatory guidance for impleme...

EHR Optimization – #HITsm Chat Topic
We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 6/30 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Justin Campbell (@tjustincampbell) and Julie Champagne (@JulieEChampagne) from @GalenHealthcare on the topic of “EHR Optimization.” Healthcare information technology witnessed a wave of implementation, where the promise of efficiency gains and meaningful use incentives drove adoption of Electronic Health Records. As most Healthcare Delivery Organizations (HDOs) now have an EHR in place, it’s becoming clear that the traditional arguments for EHR implementat...

Jabba the Hutt EHRs Are Alive And Well
If you follow @ehrandhit on Twitter, then you might have noticed that we’ve set it up to tweet out links to articles from Healthcare Scene’s database of 11,000+ blog posts. Sometimes I see these tweets and I remember amazing posts like the one I saw today about Jabba the Hutt EMR. Here’s the concept of the Jabba the Hutt EMR as I described it back in 2011: Many long time readers of EMR and HIPAA will know I like to call big, bulky, old EMR software systems, Jabba the Hutt EMR. I think comparing these old legacy EMR software to Jabba the Hutt is a great comparison. For those that don’t know Star Wars tha...

Inspector General Says CMS Made $729 Million In Questionable EHR Incentive Payments
A new report from the HHS Office of Inspector General has concluded that over a three-year period, CMS made roughly $729.4 million in EHR incentive payments to providers who didn’t comply with program requirements. To determine whether the incentive program was functioning appropriately, the OIG audited payments made between May 2011 to June 2014. After sampling payment records for 100 eligible professionals, the agency found 14 EPs, who received payments totaling $291,022, who didn’t meet incentive criteria.  The auditors found that the 14 had either failed to meet bonus criteria or didn’t provide proof that they ...

Healthcare Management Cartoon – Fun Friday
Not sure if this has been a long week for anyone else, but it’s been a challenging week here for me. So, this Fun Friday cartoon is exactly what I needed to start the weekend. I should pair this cartoon with the growth in the number of management in healthcare vs doctors over time, but I expect that most of you have seen the chart I’m talking about. Healthcare management positions have exploded in proportion to doctors, nurses, etc. I guess that’s what makes this cartoon even more ironic. Have a great weekend!
