Need advice with difficult situation
Hi everyone, I'll try and make this short and sweet. So I graduated college in May 2016 and decided medicine was the path I wanted to take around that time, but just to be sure I started scribing and I am still doing that. I had been signed up to take an MCAT course in October and was excited to start the process. However, in September (right after signing up for the course) my family and I found out that my mom has advanced lung cancer and I stopped in my tracks and dropped the MCAT... possible to be a Surgeon-Scientist?
Hi, I was wondering if it is a possible path to be a surgeon-scientist (like physician-scientist), where you do, say 70-30 or 60-40 clinic / surgery - research. Like a cardiothoracic surgeon seeing patients and doing cardiovascular genetics research and lung cancer research, or an orthopaedic surgeon researching tissue engineering, etc. To be a surgeon with time spent researching advancing fields, like CRISPR-CAS9, and immunology? Is it possible to have this as a career? Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

OncoCyte - The liquid biopsy
Was listening on the radio the other day to an interview of William Annett, the CEO of this new biotech company that just went public last week. They focus in non-invasive cancer diagnostics using the “liquid biopsy” i.e. blood/urine. They purport this as a means of confirming lung cancer in pts being screened by LDCT w/ inconclusive results instead of getting a bx. via detection of mRNA expression in malignant cells. Here’s their website and podcast of the CEO’s... OncoCyte - The liquid biopsy (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VivienLauYW, Maria Wong - Mutation and Expression Analysis of PTEN in Non-small Cell
VivienLauYW – The University of Hong Kong Medical Sciences Pathology Pharmacology MMedSc Mutation and Expression Analysis of PTEN in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer From Non-smokers Abstract This MMedSc dissertation studied the genetic variations and epigenetic variations of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10) in relation to Adenocarcinoma (AD) in particular the protein expression level of PTEN in non-smoking non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patient. PTEN gene is a tumor suppressor gene (TSG) residing at the locus10q23.3. A decrease in PTEN protein level induces the accumulation of lipid phosphoino...
