Type 1 Diabetes Autoimmunity Makes News
Back in 2012, Novo Nordisk made headlines (whether deservedly or not) for establishing a Seattle research center (see the press release at http://prn.to/1OAukdP for more detail) to focus on autoimmunity that is the core reason type 1 diabetes occurs.  Truth be told, there were never more than twenty researchers at this facility, although the company did manage to sign such prominent type 1 diabetes immunologists as Matthias von Herrath whose primary work actually takes place in San Diego at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology (LIAI), a non-profit research institute founded in 1988 that focuses on the u...

FDA to Pharma: Forget About Tweets! But You Can Host Discussion Forums About Branded Rx Products, Sorta, & Kinda Correct Misinformation
FDA has just released two guidance documents that finally address major issues discussed at the November 2009 public hearing:How to present both benefit and risk information within a “promotion” of their FDA-regulated medical products on electronic/digital platforms that are associated with character space limitations, specifically on through social media such as Twitter and through online paid search (e.g., “sponsored links” on search engines such as Google and Yahoo); and How to respond to misinformation related to a firm’s own FDA-approved or -cleared products when that information is created or disseminated ...

Novo Nordisk won FDA approval of its new FlexTouch insulin injection pens prefilled with either NovoLog (insulin aspart) or Levemir (insulin detemir). The FlexTouch features variable dose selection for anywhere between 1 and 80 units, while the button remains as easy to push for smaller injections as for larger ones. Halloween Knight
Glucolift glucose tabs are running their annual Gluc-or-Treat campaign. They say they'll take all Halloween-related photo entries, even mentioning that you can put your supplies in costume.  What do you get for sharing a pic?  You get a goodie bag of Glucolift treats!  You know how much I love free stuff.  It's a slow day today, so I may have fashioned some things out of office supplies...and so I bring you:THE ADVENTURES OF SIR NOV O'LOG!Sir Nov o'Log's blue circle helmet offers him protection.  He comes from the kingdom of Bantingbest, in the chilly north.Sir Nov o'Log versus the Monster of Unkno...

Insulin pump Alzheimer’s
See anything wrong with these two pictures? In exhibit A, you’ll see the frickin’ tSlim is showing that there is 0.73 units of insulin “on board,” with a three hour and 34 minute active curve. So I must have taken SOME insulin today. However, in exhibit B, you’ll see the pump has no memory of this. Or any other insulin today. Or any in the last week. Or in the last two weeks. Or even in the last month. In the history section of the pump there is NOTHING. The delivery summary, bolus, basal, load, and BG history screens all say “no recent events” or “n/a.” The stupid pump has no recollection of anything that h...

Sorry Charlie! Novo's Race with Insulin "Chain E-mail" Sweepstakes Campaign is Spam
I once characterized a @Racewithinsulin Levemir branded tweet as "Sleazy Twitter Spam" (search Google on "race with insulin spam" and you'll find this post). That got a lot of comments from people arguing that the tweet wasn't technically "spam."Today, however, I learned about the new Novo Nordisk Race With Insulin sweepstakes campaign that is truly a spam e-mail campaign. In fact, it is a "chain e-mail spam campaign," which is something I've never seen before. As explained in this PMLive article, "the campaign features a website www.RaceWithinsulin.com hosting a competition inviting entrants to build a 'pit crew' by e...

When the compass points south
My navigation through life is based on a five-pointed compass: The five cardinal things that make up 90% of my life. They are:My family. My diabetes. My clinical work.My writing. My university work.Normally, two of the five suck at any given moment and give me total stress. But at the same time, normally, two of the five give me great joy at any given moment. And normally, the fifth one is somewhere in the middle. All told, this keeps my universe in balance. But the last six weeks or so hasn’t been normal. No, it’s been a perfect storm of all five sucking. I was stressed on all fronts. It wasn’t pretty, and I was in an ...

Back It Up.
(Title sounds more like a rappy-type song than I had intended, but I promise, this is safe for work.) It's 9 am - do you know what your pump settings are? I'm diligent about backing up my laptop and all of the silly content therein, and I religiously take the little, red external hard drive and make sure my computers are backed up. But I'm far less fastidious about backing up other important things in my life, like my insulin pump settings.  While I never anticipate an insulin pump malfunction (stealing verbiage from the airline flight attendants who make me squirm while they explain the oxygen masks on planes), in th...

Team Novo Nordisk: Insulin "Doping" Difficult to Prove
Novo Nordisk has a penchant for teaming up with athletes to help promote its diabetes franchise. You might recall that in the U.S. Novo Nordisk's Levemir insulin brand team sponsors Charlie Kimball, a racecar driver who has diabetes (see here). Just recently Novo Nordisk in Europe created the first all-diabetes professional cycling team to compete as part of "Team Novo Nordisk."Auto racing and cycling are two sports that are heavily sponsored by corporations. Brand and company logos are plastered all over the machines and the uniforms worn by the athletes. Kimball is a Levemir-branded billboard that must comply with FDA re...
