Ultrasonography of Extrathyroidal Diseases Mimicking Intrinsic Thyroid Lesions
Some localized or multisystem diseases as well as congenital anomalies occasionally involve thyroid and unusual findings will be identified during thyroid ultrasonography. Recognition of these entities will minimize unnecessary complementary examination and lead to appropriate management for patients. Therefore, we aim to review sonographic features of these extrathyroidal diseases that affect thyroid in adults. Our review derives from cases diagnosed in our hospital and published literature, with pictures accessible using as illustration. These disorders included intrathyroidal parathyroid adenoma, intrathyroidal cystic f...

Comparison of Diagnostic Performance of B-Mode Ultrasonography and Shear Wave Elastography in Cervical Lymph Nodes
This study evaluated 130 cervical LNs in 127 patients. On conventional B-mode US, short-axis and long-axis diameters, long-to-short-axis ratio, cortical morphology, border, and presence of necrosis or calcification were evaluated. Maximum elasticity value (Emax) was collected for SWE. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of B-mode US features and SWE were compared. Final histopathologic results showed 89 benign and 41 metastatic LNs. Among the B-mode US features, cortical morphology had the highest AUC (0.884). When 54 kPa of Emax was applied as a cutoff value, the S...

Quantitative Assessment of Thyroid Gland Vascularization With Vascularization Index Using Color Superb Microvascular Imaging in Pediatric Patients With Hashimoto Thyroiditis
The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the vascularization index (VI) obtained using superb microvascular imaging (SMI) technique in the diagnosis of Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT). The thyroid glands of 80 patients with HT and 107 healthy, asymptomatic participants were examined using SMI. The thyroid parenchyma echogenicity was evaluated, and the thyroid gland volume was measured. Vascularization index measurements were performed by manually drawing the contours of the thyroid parenchyma using the free region of interest with color 2-dimensional SMI VI mode. The quantitative VI values of the patients and the asy...

Appropriate Neck Ultrasonography Surveillance During the First 10 Years After Hemithyroidectomy in Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma Patients: A Single-Center Study
In conclusion, the PTMC tumor recurrence rate was low, indicating that only 1 or 2 sessions of postoperative US follow-up may be sufficient to detect tumor recurrence within the first 10 years after hemithyroidectomy in PTMC patients. (Source: Ultrasound Quarterly)

The Clinical Value of New Scoring System of Cervical Lymph Node
To distinguish malignant cervical lymphadenopathy, we established a new scoring system based on ultrasound features. Two hundred sixty-three patients with cervical lymphadenopathy received ultrasonic examination and underwent ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy or fine needle aspiration. The scoring system was proposed by multivariate logistic regression analysis and compared with Liao scoring system (0.06 × age + 4.76 × shortest-to-longest axis ratio + 2.15 × internal echo + 1.80 × vascular pattern). A new scoring system model, 1.346 × margin + 1.339 × hilum + 2.411 × calcification + 2.619 × vascular pattern + 0....

The Value of Elasticity Contrast Index in the Differential Diagnosis of Thyroid Solid Nodules
Objectives To assess the clinical value of elasticity contrast index (ECI) in differentiating malignant thyroid nodules from benign ones. Methods Conventional ultrasound and elastography with pulsation of the carotid artery used as the compression source were retrospectively reviewed on 175 patients (143 females and 32 males; mean ± SD age, 45.17 ± 11.45 years) with 236 solid nodules (113 malignant and 123 benign). All nodules were confirmed by fine-needle aspiration or surgery to be accurately diagnosed. Elasticity contrast index values were computed and used to quantify local stiffness contrast within a nodule as ...

Ultrasonography-Guided Core Needle Biopsy Did Not Reduce Diagnostic Lobectomy for Thyroid Nodules Diagnosed as Atypia of Undetermined Significance/Follicular Lesion of Undetermined Significance
In this study, we evaluated the role of ultrasonography-guided core needle biopsy (US-CNB) in deciding upon management for prior atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance (AUS/FLUS) results. From May 2013 to June 2015, 149 thyroid nodules in 149 patients diagnosed as having AUS/FLUS were included. Of the 149 thyroid nodules, 86 (57.5%) had repeat US-guided fine needle aspiration (US-FNA) and 63 (42.3%) had US-CNB. Histopathology results were divided according to various indications for diagnostic lobectomy, and rates of diagnosis that are candidates for diagnostic lobectomy were com...

Ultrasonography in the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Therapy for Primary Thyroid Lymphoma
This study aims to evaluate the value of ultrasonography in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of primary thyroid lymphoma. The clinical data of 12 patients, who were pathologically confirmed with thyroid lymphoma and treated in our hospital, were retrospectively analyzed. Ultrasonography was performed on the thyroid and neck lymph nodes, and the sonographic features of the lesions were recorded. During the course of the diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma, the patients were monitored and followed up by ultrasonography. The sonographic features of 12 patients with 20 lesions revealed hypoechoic masses, within which â€...

The Application of Ultrasound and Fine-Needle Aspiration in Low-Volume Lateral Lymph Nodes of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Patients
This study reviewed the medical records of 996 LLNs from 858 patients with suspicious thyroid nodules or after thyroidectomy from January 2013 to January 2016. All patients took US-FNA. The US characteristics and the malignancy rate of LLNs classified into group A and group B based on size were analyzed and compared (group A, ≥6 mm; group B, 0.005) in multiple regression analysis, whereas the malignancy rate in the large LLNs (286/425; 67.3%) was slightly higher than that in the small LLNs (338/571; 59.2%) (P = 0.01). However, no significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of calcification, absence of...

Comparison of Real-Time and Static Ultrasonography Diagnoses for Detecting Incidental Diffuse Thyroid Disease: A Multicenter Study
This study aimed to compare diagnostic accuracy of real-time and static ultrasonography (US) for differentiating diffuse thyroid disease (DTD) from normal thyroid parenchyma (NTP). At 4 participating institutions, 203 patients underwent real-time thyroid US before thyroid surgery. For static US, the same radiologists retrospectively evaluated US findings on a picture archive and communication system after 4 weeks. In real-time and static US diagnoses, US category included no DTD, indeterminate, suspicious for DTD, and DTD. We investigated the diagnostic accuracy of real-time and static US with a receiver operating characte...
