Risk Factors Portending a Total Hip Arthroplasty for Patients Who Have Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, young age, men, oral corticosteroid use, tobacco use, and alcohol abuse are risk factors for patients who have ONFH and had a THA. The degree of risk from greatest to least were: oral corticosteroid use, tobacco use, men, alcohol abuse, and age <55 years old.PMID:38372559 (Source: Surgical Technology International)

Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Review of Debridement Techniques
Surg Technol Int. 2024 Feb 15;44:sti44/1718. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a prevalent complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Patients with DM have a lifetime risk of DFUs as high as 34%. The pathogenesis of DFUs is multifactorial, and the most common underlying causes are poor glycemic control, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, foot deformity, and poor foot care. Diabetic lower-extremity complications are also a significant burden in terms of healthcare costs. In the United States alone, the direct cost of diabetic foot care...

A Novel Strategy to Substantially Reduce the Incidence of Periprosthetic Joint Infection Following Total Hip Arthroplasty with Antimicrobial Agents
This article reviews the concept and implementation of a novel antimicrobial agent to substantially reduce the incidence of PJI. The regular implementation of this infection prophylaxis should be successful in drastically reducing the rate of PJI following primary THA.PMID:38372561 (Source: Surgical Technology International)

The Batalha Clitoropexy: Shortening an Elongated Clitoris - A Minimally Invasive Technique
Surg Technol Int. 2024 Feb 15;44:sti44/1766. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFemale cosmetic genital surgery is becoming increasingly sought after by women who are concerned with the appearance of their vulva. Labiaplasty for the labia minora is undoubtedly the most commonly performed female cosmetic genital surgery. However, an increasing number of patients seen in our clinics in both Brazil and the United States are presenting with clitoral hypertrophy, specifically clitoral elongation. The elongated clitoris will usually protrude beyond the labia minora and majora and from the patient's perspective will give a less femini...

Systematic Review of Local Anaesthetic Systemic Toxicity in Urology
CONCLUSION: LAST is seen only rarely in adult urology. Most iatrogenic cases occur due to penile dorsal nerve block and most patients have no long-term sequelae. Urologists should be familiar with its presentation and management, and minimise risk by adhering to local anaesthetic maximum safe dose ranges.PMID:38237111 | DOI:10.52198/23.STI.43.UR1725 (Source: Surgical Technology International)

State of the Art Review of Surgical Techniques for Microaxial Flow Pump Implantation
Surg Technol Int. 2023 Dec 29;43:sti43/1728. doi: 10.52198/23.STI.43.CV1728. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecently, temporary mechanical circulatory support (tMCS) has been increasingly used for cardiogenic shock therapy. Originally designed as a bail-out option for patients who could not be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass, the indications for tMCS have been expended and now enable us to support a wide range of patients with various cardiac pathologies. Modern tMCS devices include microaxial flow pumps (mAFP) which are small, versatile systems that can provide both acute cardiac support and cardiac protection for high-...

Use of Indocyanine Green Fluorescence During Total Thyroidectomy to Identify Parathyroid Glands and Prevent Hypoparathyroidism
CONCLUSION: Use of ICG fluorescein angiography may contribute to predicting and thus preventing postoperative definitive hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy. The results of this case series confirm recent studies. Caution is advised when weakly perfused parathyroid glands are discovered.PMID:38237113 | DOI:10.52198/23.STI.43.GS1741 (Source: Surgical Technology International)
