The Novel Use of Bipolar Radiofrequency Microneedling in the Treatment of Lichen Sclerosus
CONCLUSION: Radiofrequency with microneedling treatments for persistent LS showed significant improvement in LS symptoms. As LS is a chronic recurring condition, the treatment protocol resulted in high patient satisfaction for these women who had not experienced these results in terms of amount of symptom resolution or duration of symptom resolution with prior treatments using topical steroid cream or other modalities.PMID:38038180 (Source: Surgical Technology International)

Recent Advances in Rib Plating
Surg Technol Int. 2023 Nov 29;43:sti43/1726. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRib fractures are a common injury in blunt trauma and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) have led to better patient outcomes for those with highly unstable complex rib fractures, as well as those with less severe injuries. This result has been due in part to the expansion of indications for repair, as well as the development of new hardware systems to address a variety of fracture patterns and injuries. This joint advancement of operator techniques, outcomes research, a...

An External Acetabular Alignment Guide Decreases Positional Variance
This study aimed to determine whether an intraoperative external alignment guide decreases variance in acetabular component positioning.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult patients who underwent primary THA from 2014-2018 were reviewed. Exclusion criteria were navigation, robot-assisted surgery, and inflammatory, post-traumatic, or avascular arthritis. One surgeon used an external guide while the second surgeon resected osteophytes and utilized available anatomical landmarks for positioning. Anteversion and inclination, variance, "safe zone" positioning, operative time, and hip instability were assessed. Multivariable regression ...

3D Reconstruction for a Complex Pediatric Redo Aortic Arch Surgery in a 9-Year-Old Ukrainian Refugee
Surg Technol Int. 2023 Nov 30;43:sti43/1738. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRedo aortic surgery poses significant challenges, particularly in complex scenarios involving congenital heart conditions that have been previously operated on several years prior. The integration of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and printing holds immense potential to greatly improve surgical precision, particularly in critical situations.PMID:38038175 (Source: Surgical Technology International)

Infective Endocarditis After Percutaneous Device Closure of Atrial Septal Defects: Incidence, Diagnosis, and Treatment. Case Report and Literature Review
We describe a case of late IE after percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO). We also performed a literature review on this subject. We reviewed a total of 42,365 patients who were treated with percutaneous devices: 13,916 for ostium secundum (OS) (32%), 24,726 for PFO (58%) and 3,723 for OS+PFO (8%). Among these patients, we identified 50 cases of IE after atrial septal defect device closure (0.001%). In contrast to previous reports, nearly 66% of IE in this setting occurred late, after at least 6 months from the procedure (33/50 patients). A statistical analysis clearly showed that the mean time from the proced...

Odds of Mortality in Geriatric Patients with Appendicitis is 22 Times Higher than that in Non-Geriatrics: An Analysis of 336,880 Patients from NIS Database
Surg Technol Int. 2023 Nov 27;43:sti43/1671. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA total of 336,880 patients were included in the cohort. Mean age was 37.7 and 73.8 years in adult and elderly patients, respectively. 97.3% of adults and 94.2% of elderly patients underwent an operation. The mortality rate in the elderly patients (1.04%, n=402/38,509) was 22 times higher (p<0.0001) than that in adult patients (0.047%, n=144/301,408). Mean (SD) hospital length of stay (HLOS) was 2.6 (2.9) days in adults and 4.9 (5.2) days in elderly patients (p<0.0001). Ninety-nine percent of adult and elderly patients were discharged within 1...

Adipose Tissue Stem Cells for Knee Arthritis and Cartilage Lesions: A Three-Year Follow Up
CONCLUSION: Adipose-derivedSVF, injected intraarticularly in arthritic knees, seems to provide good to excellent clinical results for three years and radiological results for cartilage lesions for two years post injections. All patients were satisfied with this treatment with reduction in pain and better joint mobility, especially after two to three months and up to three years. No serious side effects or complications were reported.PMID:38011866 (Source: Surgical Technology International)
