In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Statistics Canada is releasing a new fact sheet titled "Social connections among persons with and without mental health-related disabilities, 2020." Disability can affect interactions with others, impacting social connectedness. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting health and safety measures altered how Canadians interacted with their social networks. This shift led to increased feelings of isolation and mental health-related challenges, which aligns with the study titled, "Self-perceived mental health and mental health care needs during the COVID-19 pande...

Sleep disturbance and sleep duration have been associated with obesity in the general population, but few studies have examined this in a military setting. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) differ from the general population in their occupational demands, such as deployments and frequent and regular postings; requirements for physical training, testing and maintenance of physical levels; and a unique workforce culture. Because the CAF population is generally excluded from national population health surveys, the study "Sleep duration, sleep quality and obesity in the Canadian Armed Forces" provides data on a unique and unders...

In 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, about 140,330 new cancer cases were diagnosed and subsequently reported to the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR). Overall, cancer diagnoses among the male population (-13.2%) declined more than those affecting the female population (-11.4%). (Source: Statistics Ca...

A growing body of research is showing an association between low levels of education and poor health outcomes, including increased risk of premature death. Investigating this relationship is limited due to a lack of sociodemographic information in administrative data in Canada, including death records. To fill this data gap, Statistics Canada is releasing a new area-level measure of the population with less than high school education using the 2016 Census of Population data. This measure can be integrated with administrative records and survey data to understand inequalities associated with a low level of education in Cana...

It is important to monitor the prevalence of hypertension (high blood pressure) among Canadian children and adolescents due to increased risk of developing related health problems. Prevalence of hypertension estimates have been based on clinical guidelines and serve to quantify and track the potential burden of this health condition. But what if there are changes in clinical guidelines? To date, estimates of hypertension among children and youth at the Canadian population-level have been based on clinical guidelines produced in 2004 by the National High Blood Pressure Education Program (NHBPEP   2004). However, updated gu...
