Prevalence of anti-hepatitis B core in men who have sex with men attending a sexual health clinic in Brighton, UK, from 2012 to 2019
Mahmoud Gouda, Colin Fitzpatrick, Deborah Williams, Daniel Richardson Hepatitis B is sexually transmitted among men who have sex with men (MSM) and anti-hepatitis B core (anti-HBc) determines current or previous infection. A total of 331/3342 (10%) of MSM had a positive anti-HBc (0.3% had active hepatitis B), which was associated with being aged >30 years, previous hepatitis C, previous syphilis and being non-UK born (but not living with HIV, or having gonorrhoea or chlamydia), and the proportion testing positive reduced significantly between 2012 and 2019. Hepatitis B is endemic in MSM locall...

Sexually transmitted infection testing among transgender and non-binary persons: results of a community-based cross-sectional survey
Ashley Lacombe-Duncan, Shanna K. Kattari, Leonardo Kattari, Ayden I. Scheim, Brayden A. Misiolek Studies demonstrate higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among transgender (trans) and non-binary (TNB) persons, particularly trans women. We expand the literature by examining non-HIV STI testing and including trans men and non-binary persons. We found high rates of lifetime non-HIV STI testing (82.1%, 79.6%, 86.7%, and 77.1% among trans women, trans men, non-binary persons assigned male at birth, and non-binary persons assigned female at birth, respectively), with no statistically significant differences acr...

Men of refugee and migrant backgrounds in Australia: a scoping review of sexual and reproductive health research
Zelalem Mengesha, Alexandra J. Hawkey, Mazen Baroudi, Jane M. Ussher, Janette Perz Refugee and migrant men in Australia are currently under-represented and generally marginalised in fertility and sexual and reproductive health program development, research conceptualisation and implementation. This review indicates that sexual and reproductive health literature on refugee and migrant men largely focuses on sexually transmitted infections, meaning other areas such as contraception, fertility, the impact of gender roles and psychosexual health are poorly understood. This knowledge is needed to evaluate and inform national an...

Evaluating the time of HIV infection, diagnosis and treatment delays based on HIV notification data in Northwest China, 2008 & #x2013;19
Rui Zhao, Hailan Zhang, Xin Zhao, Tianyi Zhuang, Christopher K. Fairley, Jason J. Ong, Shiyi He, Lu Bai, Jane Hocking, Lei Zhang, Xiaoli Wei, Guihua Zhuang We estimate the time from HIV infection to initiation of ART and the proportion of undiagnosed HIV infections, based on HIV notification data from Northwest China during 2008–19 and found: first, we estimated about that two-thirds of HIV cases remain undiagnosed and this proportion was even higher among heterosexuals; and second, the time from HIV diagnosis to ART initiation has reduced significantly over the past decade. Slamsex in The Netherlands among men who have sex with men (MSM): use patterns, motives, and adverse effects
Leon Knoops, Jan van Amsterdam, Thijs Albers, Tibor Markus Brunt, Wim van den Brink About 0.5–3.1% of men who have sex with men (MSM) self inject drugs before or during sex (‘slamming’). Our survey among 175 Dutch MSM, who had practised slamsex, reported various adverse health effects associated with slamsex (skin problems, collapsed veins, infections, and psychological symptoms, like insomnia, sadness, depressed mood, anxiety, suicidal tendencies and loss of control). The current information of slamsex by MSM may contribute to the reinforcement of accessible, non-judgmental and...

Physical function limitation among gay and bisexual men aged & #x2265;55years with and without HIV: findings from the Australian Positive and Peers Longevity Evaluation Study (APPLES)
David C. Boettiger, Md. Hamidul Huque, Mark Bloch, Ian Woolley, David J. Templeton, Matthew G. Law, Neil Fraser, Jennifer Hoy, Kathy Petoumenos We assessed physical function among gay and bisexual men in Australia aged ≥55 years using a self-administered survey. The survey was completed by 381 men: 186 without HIV and 195 with HIV. Compared with men without HIV, those with HIV had higher proportions of severe (13.3% vs 8.1%) and moderate-to-severe (26.7% vs 24.2%) physical function limitation. The mechanisms underlying this association require investigation, particularly given the rapidly incr...

The sexual network and risky sexual behaviours among male migrant workers in China & #x2019;s gender imbalance context
Min Zhao, Huijun Liu, Lun Hai, Lei Zhang The sexual network constitutes the pathway of HIV transmission, and it is crucial for understanding and preventing the spread of HIV. The results showed that the sexual network variables of partner age, partner marital status, partner type and relationship stability were significantly associated with risky sexual behaviours. Future research should focus on the determinants of structured sexual networks and identify key groups at risk for cross-population HIV transmission to improve intervention measures. Sustaining sexual and reproductive health through COVID-19 pandemic restrictions: qualitative interviews with Australian clinicians
Christy E. Newman, Doug Fraser, Jason J. Ong, Christopher Bourne, Andrew E. Grulich, Benjamin R. Bavinton Health services were profoundly impacted by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) restrictions, and difficult choices were made to sustain essential services for people with HIV and those at risk of HIV. We interviewed clinicians working in sexual and reproductive health services around Australia, who described the most important adaptations as being related to triage, teamwork, telehealth and trust. Insights gained from service adaptations caused by COVID-19 have the potential to drive long-term innovations in the sexua...

Intimacy during the COVID-19 pandemic: an online survey examining the impact of COVID-19 on the sexual practices and dating app usage of people living in Hong Kong
Edmond P. H. Choi, Bryant P. H. Hui, Jojo Y. Y. Kwok, Eric P. F. Chow The COVID-19 pandemic and its related infection control measures might alter individuals’ sexual health practices and dating app usage. There was a decline in sexual activities with non-regular sexual partners during the pandemic while dating apps were used more frequently. Interventions to promote sexual well-being during the pandemic should be considered. (Source: Sexual Health)

Under-utilisation of cardioprotective glucose-lowering medication in diabetics living with HIV
Bakani Butale, Ian Woolley, Kathryn Cisera, Tony Korman, Georgia Soldatos Diabetes is increasingly common among people living with HIV (PLWH). Given new evidence demonstrating cardiovascular benefits of sodium glucose transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1 RA) in diabetic patients, we reviewed medical charts of PLWH at Monash Health to determine the rates of their use and found that only 4% of diabetic patients were receiving SGLT2i and 19% were receiving GLP1 RA. Prescribers should carefully consider their choice of glucose-lowering medication when treating PLWH. (Source: Sexual Health)
