The need for sexual health clinics, their future role, and contribution to public health
Meena S. Ramchandani, Christopher Bourne, Lindley A. Barbee, Elske Hoornenborg, Preeti Pathela, Stephanie N. Taylor, Henry de Vries Specialised sexual health clinics (SHCs) play an important role in addressing the staggering rates of STIs seen in many high-income nations. This review discusses the rationale for sustaining and expanding the network of SHCs, their future role in the community, the need for a strong infrastructure to support SHCs and describes some innovative programs developed in US, Australia, and the Netherlands to serve priority populations. Sexual and reproductive health and rights in the era of COVID-19: a qualitative study of the experiences of vulnerable urban youth in Ethiopia
Nicola Jones, Kate Pincock, Workneh Yadete, Meron Negussie, Estibel Mitiku, Tsinu AmdeSelassie The COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns in Ethiopia have had severe consequences for the sexual health of vulnerable urban youth. The paper finds that young people with HIV, disabilities, involved in commercial sex work and living on the streets face increased levels of sexual violence, limited access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, and loss of livelihoods. Strategies to protect urban young people’s sexual health and rights must include reopening health services promptly and impro...

Measuring and evaluating sexual health in the era of digital health: challenges and opportunities
We describe the opportunities, challenges, and potential of effective measurement and evaluation in the era of digital health, providing recommendations for policy and practice. Only by addressing current inequity through a social justice lens, and the gaps in access and provision through robust measurement and evaluation, will we fulfil the true potential of digital health. Priorities in the implementation of partner services for HIV/STIs in high-income nations: a narrative review of evidence and recommendations
Matthew R. Golden, Jo Gibbs, Charlotte Woodward, Claudia S. Estcourt Partner notification, the process of notifying, testing and sometimes treating sex partners of people with STIs, is a key element of infection control in the population. Current approaches to partner notification struggle to deliver good outcomes at scale. Here, we summarise evidence related to different approaches to partner notification for STIs in high-income nations, make recommendations for best practice and identify priority research questions. Participatory approaches to delivering clinical sexually transmitted infections services: a narrative review
Rayner Kay Jin Tan, Gifty Marley, Eneyi E. Kpokiri, Tong Wang, Weiming Tang, Joseph D. Tucker Although sexual health programming and clinical sexually transmitted infections (STIs) services delivery have traditionally been developed through ‘top-down’ approaches, there is emerging evidence that participatory approaches, characterised by deeper levels of engagement and shared leadership with communities, provide benefits for the development and implementation of such services. This narrative review provides an overview of how participatory approaches have been utilised, the methods of participa...

What is the role of sexual health services in the delivery of primary prevention of sexually transmitted infections? A narrative review
Danielle Jayes, Rachel Merrick, Caisey Pulford, Erna Buitendam, Hamish Mohammed, John Saunders Prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is central to achieving good sexual health and to reducing the cost burden of treatment and management on healthcare services. Specialist sexual health services (SHS) are ideally placed to deliver primary prevention interventions for STIs; however, quantifying their impact remains a challenge. This review summarises the role of specialist SHS in the delivery of primary prevention and considers the barriers and opportunities presented by emerging technologies for ...

Why sexual health clinics are important in the 2020s
Nicholas A. Medland, Ruth Taylor, John Saunders, Michael Rayment, Ashini Fox, Ann Sullivan Sexual health care has been transformed by a range of innovations, many of which take delivery of key services out of the clinic and into the community. This review examines the role of the sexual health clinic in this new service landscape. We conclude that sexual health clinics offer many services essential to patient health and activities essential to the health system that are best delivered in physical locations with a concentration of funding, infrastructure and expertise. Increased awareness of event-driven PrEP and knowledge of how to use it: results from a cross-sectional survey of gay and bisexual men in Australia
Curtis Chan, Doug Fraser, Andrew E. Grulich, Steven Philpot, Matthew Vaughan, Michael Wacher, Benjamin R. Bavinton Event-driven pre-exposure prophylaxis (ED-PrEP) is effective at preventing HIV among cis gay and bisexual men. We found in a survey of gay and bisexual men who had heard of PrEP, just over two-thirds (68%) had heard of ED-PrEP, and of those who had heard of it, less than half (44%) knew how to take ED-PrEP correctly as per clinical guidelines. We recommend further work to increase awareness and knowledge of ED-PrEP to promote effective use to prevent HIV infection. (Source: Sexual Health)

Racial-ethnic disparities in adolescent sexual behaviours: the cross-sectional Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2009 & #x2013;19
This study examines changes over time in racial-ethnic disparities in sexual risk behaviours among US high school students, finding that trends in adolescent sexual risk behaviours statistically differ by race/ethnicity. Although disparities in sexual risk behaviours may be shrinking for many behaviours, work is still needed to achieve health equity in risks associated with HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy. Dimensions of sexual experiences reflected through adjective selection: findings from a US nationally representative survey
This study examines how 20 adjectives describing adults’ most recent sexual experience (e.g. boring, playful, romantic, etc.) illustrate underlying dimensions of sexual experiences. Our exploratory factor analysis reveals two important components: (1) sexual pleasure; and (2) sexual danger. These two factors were correlated with sexual health outcomes including sexual wantedness, orgasm, self-rated sexual health, meaningfulness of sex, and pain during sex. Findings suggest that the pleasure dimension is important for both genders, and especially for women, in experiences where the sex was want...

Termination of pregnancy in Queensland post-decriminalisation: a content analysis of client records from an all-options pregnancy counselling organisation
Maryanne Cleetus, Mattea Lazarou, Siân Tooker, Bec Jenkinson, Judith A. Dean Despite termination of pregnancy decriminalisation in 2018 in Queensland, people accessing this service continue to face inequitable barriers such as interpersonal violence, sexual and reproductive education, stigma, and affordability. By examining the experiences of people seeking assistance from a counselling service, we highlight how these barriers intersect to undermine reproductive rights, even in a decriminalised context. All-options pregnancy counselling services play a vital role in supporting access, but inclusive multisectoral...

Patient-centred approaches to providing care at HIV diagnosis: perspectives from healthcare and peer-support workers
Nathanael Wells, Garrett Prestage, Dean Murphy, Nicholas Medland, Limin Mao, Chris Howard, Christopher Fairley, Graham Brown, Steven P. Philpot, Patient-centred care is considered an important aspect of health care delivery, management of HIV, and can improve uptake of and adherence to HIV treatments. This paper draws on semi-structured interviews with experienced sexual health clinicians and HIV support workers to understand their approaches to delivering HIV diagnoses and care immediately thereafter. Effectiveness and acceptability of conversational agents for sexual health promotion: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Divyaa Balaji, Linwei He, Stefano Giani, Tibor Bosse, Reinout Wiers, Gert-Jan de Bruijn Public health interventions for sexual health promotion can benefit from using new technologies, such as conversational agents, by engaging users in personalised, intelligent and evidence-based dialogue using natural language. As this is a young, but rapidly growing, field, this review summarises both the effectiveness and user acceptability of available sexual health interventions using conversational agents. The results support the potential of these interventions, and inform their design and evaluation for future research. (Source: Sexual Health)
