Outcome of pregnant women admitted to critical care unit with confirmed severe COVID-19: A center experience
CONCLUSION: The results of this study highlight the characteristics of pregnant women admitted to the ICU at a specialized tertiary healthcare center in Saudi Arabia. The APACHI IV scores accurately predicted patient's mortality, duration of MV, and length of ICU stay. In our study, we shared our experience of managing severe COVID-19 infections in pregnant patients.PMID:38657988 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20240022 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Risk factors for severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a Chinese cohort of very preterm infants
CONCLUSION: Our study not only reaffirmed the established risk factors of low GA and BW for sBPD in VPIs, but also identified additional, potentially modifiable risk factors. Further research is warranted to explore whether intervention in these modifiable factors might reduce the risk of sBPD.Clinical Trial Reg. No.: ChiCTR1900023418.PMID:38657990 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230741 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Inappropriate laboratory test utilization in outpatient tertiary care: Implications for value-based healthcare
CONCLUSION: The study identified significantly high rates of inadequate repetitions of frequently requested laboratory tests. Urgent action is therefore crucial to overcoming such an issue.PMID:38657991 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230512 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

The evolvement of breast cancer therapies: What we have done and where all these head off
Saudi Med J. 2024 Apr;45(4):331-340. doi: 10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230492.ABSTRACTAlthough, from a therapeutic standpoint, breast cancer (BC) is considerably well-characterized, it still leaves puzzling spots. The Her-2+/PR+/ER+ BC can benefit from the mainstays of anticancer therapy and immunotherapy and overall have a better prognosis. Triple-negative BC, due to the concomitant absence of Her-2/PR/ER receptors, is more challenging and necessitates different strategies. It has been learned that the mainstay anti-BC therapies were initially designed to demolish as many cancer cells as they possibly could. However, the numb...

Prevalence of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among medical students in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated a higher prevalence of adult ADHD among medical students in the Eastern Province than the reported rates locally and globally. This could be attributed to social and cultural factors, as well as the chosen method for assessing the symptoms of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual items.PMID:38657995 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230841 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Primary pancreatic lymphoma: Histopathological pattern of 8 cases
CONCLUSION: Primary pancreatic lymphoma is a very rare tumor without specific clinical, laboratory tests, or radiological findings. Abdominal pain is the most common clinical presentation. Diffuse large b-cell lymphoma is the most common pathological subtype. Primary pancreatic lymphoma should be taken into consideration when evaluating pancreatic mass to avoid unnecessary surgical resection.PMID:38438200 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.3.20230930 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Immunomodulatory effects of BAFF and APRIL cytokines in post-pulmonary infection lung cancer: Implications for drug resistance and progression
Saudi Med J. 2024 Mar;45(3):223-229. doi: 10.15537/smj.2024.45.3.20230873.ABSTRACTLung cancer is a complicated and challenging disease and is one of the most common causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Within the lung microenvironment, specific cytokines, including the B cell activation factor (BAFF) and the A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL), are produce by various cells, notably airway epithelial cells, in response allergic inflammation or pulmonary infection. These cytokines play a critical role in maintaining local immune responses and fostering the survival of immune cells. The BAFF and APRIL system have...

CONCLUSION: In Saudi Arabia, a trend of BC incidence migration towards older patients may be ensuing. However, prediction of an advanced and aggressive presentation requires the enhancement of screening programs and standardized protocols for disease management.PMID:38438204 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.3.20230656 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Comparison of bacteremic pneumonia caused by < em > Escherichia coli < /em > and < em > Klebsiella pneumoniae < /em > : A retrospective study
CONCLUSION: Patients diagnosed with KP-BP exhibited a similar prognosis as those diagnosed with E. coli-BP. For patients with KP-BP, the risk of mortality was significantly higher for those who were in the intensive care unit, were infected with carbapenem-resistant strains, or had a high sequential organ failure assessment score. In patients with E. coli-BP, the Pitt bacteremia score was strongly associated with the 30-day mortality rate.PMID:38438206 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.3.20230428 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)
