Reducing Inpatient Psychiatric Unit Denials: A Case Management Quality Improvement Project
Purpose of Project: The purpose of the inpatient psychiatric unit denials reduction project was to establish a taskforce to analyze denials data for root cause and identify an effective solution to prevent denials through improved provider documentation. Primary Practice Setting: The development and implementation of the project occurred at Stanford Health Care, a nonprofit Level 1 trauma hospital, with a 29-bed inpatient psychiatric unit containing both open and secured levels of care. Conclusions: Professional case managers can intervene for patients with MPNs to improve (a) coordination of scheduled therapeutic phlebotomy procedures, and (b) education about subcutaneous injections and frequent monitoring of laboratory reports. The Science of Gratitude
“Gratitude” is more than a buzzword and may be more important than we realize. The science of gratitude is worth delving into, as science is beginning to show the following: the symptoms of the grateful person versus the stressed person with headaches, sleeplessness, compassion fatigue, and digestive issues can be likened to the sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight response) versus the parasympathetic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that allows our body to “rest and digest”)—the grateful person. Implementation of Interprofessional Meetings Preparing Caregivers of Patients With Brain Injury for Discharge: A Pilot Study
This study used a pre-/post-quasi-experimental retrospective design. Caregivers of patients admitted to the brain injury unit completed the Preparedness for Caregiving Scale at admission and discharge. The intervention group received an interprofessional team meeting focused on the needs of the caregiver in preparation for caregiving within 3–4 days of admission compared with unscheduled meetings as needed. Results: Scores improved significantly from admission to discharge in usual care and intervention groups. Sample size was insufficient to detect differences between groups.
