How Bad Is It? Usefulness of the “ 7eed Model ” for Scoring Severity and Level of Need in Complex Emergencies
Discussion Our assessments indicate that the 7eed model is based on indicators with a value that is readily available, provides scores that vary among countries and over time, and in addition, reliably captures levels of severity. The developed heat maps visually illustrate the severity and the variation among countries. They show that both vulnerability and exposure together form the severity of a CE, while the scoring provides measurable comparisons that can support needs based decision-making. The results in figure 7 show a high correlation between excess mortality and severity score, which indicates that the model ...

Socio-demographic Predictors for Urban Community Disaster Health Risk Perception and Household Based Preparedness in a Chinese Urban City
CONCLUSION The current findings suggest that future research and policy formulation should focus on strengthening household disaster preparedness, and enhancing disaster health risk literacy in the general public. High level disaster-related mitigation knowledge within the community is an essential asset in the development of preparedness enhancement programs. Further investigation will be necessary to examine other aspects of disaster health risk literacy, including the capability and skills to acquire, evaluate and comprehend disaster-related information, and the ability to implement emergency response plans to mitigate ...

Behavior Problems and Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms in Children Beginning School: A Comparison of Pre- and Post-Earthquake Groups
Conclusions This is the first study to report behavior problems and PTS symptoms among children who had lengthy experience of earthquakes and post-disaster stressors during early childhood as compared to a demographically similar group from similar and nearby neighborhoods who did not experience the disaster. The major finding showed that there were significantly more behaviour problems and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the children who entered school after the earthquakes. The rate of PTS symptoms in the Pre-EQ Group is comparable to rates in non-disaster exposed communities.2,4 The rate of children with high PTS scor...

If Numbers Can Speak, Who Listens? Creating Engagement and Learning for Effective Uptake of DRR Investment in Developing Countries
Introduction Amid the rising costs of natural disasters observed globally, emerging international consensus holds that a primary remedy to the lack of appropriate risk management – and ex-ante disaster risk reduction (DRR) investment in particular – can be found in better communication regarding the cost-effectiveness of DRR investment 1,2. Over the past two decades, natural disasters have affected a total of 4.4 billion people worldwide, causing as much as $2 trillion in economic losses 3. By 2030, accelerating urbanization, continued asset build-up in hazard-prone areas and other adverse consequences of poorly manage...

Needs of Internally Displaced Women and Children in Baghdad, Karbala, and Kirkuk, Iraq
Conclusions The vulnerability of this population is great, and the emotional trauma of multiple displacements, kidnapping and deaths from intentional violence is great. While some aid is reaching families, much more is needed. Though Iraq is a middle income country, reaching the IDPs in central Iraq will take much more in international assistance than is currently being received. Unfortunately, at this time of great need, assistance is being cut back throughout the region because of lack of funding.10 The local civil society organizations which have sprung up in many locations to assist IDPs, offer an avenue for targeting ...

Leveraging Social Computing for Personalized Crisis Communication using Social Media
Conclusions In very fast pace, social media have acquired a prominent role in media and our daily life71. During crisis and emergency, people tend to approach social media not only because of the need for quick information, but also due to the human tendency for storytelling, which allows people to experience their lives as coherent, orderly and meaningful. It is what makes people’s life more than a blooming, buzzing confusion117. Communication with public during emergency is critical for successful emergency management118 life saving, rescue and recovery. On the other hand , one should take into account that 2.08 billio...

A Comparative Analysis of Disaster Risk, Vulnerability and Resilience Composite Indicators
This study has found that these calls have been largely unheeded. Despite the large increase in number of disaster risk, resilience and vulnerability composite indicators being developed, there has not been an increase in the use of sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. Few methodologies are undertaking explicit sensitivity and uncertainty analyses and where it is undertaken it is typically limited to one or two aspects of the methodology. This makes it difficult to assess quality, especially when many choices in index construction appear to have been made arbitrarily or with limited justification. Some sensitivity analyse...

Assessing Households Preparedness for Earthquakes: An Exploratory Study in the Development of a Valid and Reliable Persian-version Tool
Conclusion The negative consequences of earthquakes can be reduced by preparing households appropriately in the event of quakes. Considering the high capacity of public health networks distributed around the country, health community workers can successfully apply the tool for estimating household preparedness. Primary health centers are active community-based health agencies in Iran, so it is strongly recommended to use their full participation to accomplish any disaster preparedness and mitigation projects. Achieving research integrity can be assumed as one of the main advantages of the present study. Hence, it is su...

Characteristics of an Effective International Humanitarian Assistance: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: In this review we have presented the IHA effectiveness characteristics from previous reports and documents. The evidence from this study supports the idea that there is a lack of scientific studies in the field of IHA effectiveness. Also the findings of this study indicate that there is no agreed definition for IHA effectiveness characteristics, although there is a global need for conducting IHA effectiveness evaluation. We developed a conceptual mapping of existing characteristics of IHA effectiveness. Although this study is a first step toward our understanding of IHA effectiveness, the findings add to g...

Rapid and near Real-time Assessments of Population Displacement Using Mobile Phone Data Following Disasters: The 2015 Nepal Earthquake
Conclusions The value of CDRs when integrated with more traditional data sources within modelling frameworks has been shown across multiple disease, development and disaster application examples. The field of CDR analytics in the humanitarian space is therefore moving beyond pilot studies and towards a more mature and operationally valuable platform. Here we have shown how this can be achieved in a disaster response situation through the partnership of scientists, mobile network operators and response agencies. The work described is not a single study, but the initiation of an ongoing dynamic and near-real time monitoring ...

Evacuation During Hurricane Sandy: Data from a Rapid Community Assessment
Discussion Less than half of survey respondents evacuated for Sandy. We consider this to be low considering that residents in areas more vulnerable to Sandy were instructed to evacuate. Possible explanations for this low evacuation rate may be due to several factors. A number of disaster studies have assessed how individuals respond to disaster warnings, and in most cases the timing, personalization, and clarity of the message, and risk perception affected evacuation.7,9,10,15,17 It is possible that the degree of evacuation warning compliance in this study was a result of these underlying dimensions, which were beyond the ...

Demographic Determinants of Disaster Preparedness Behaviors Amongst Tehran Inhabitants, Iran
Conclusion Our findings show that monthly income level, previous disaster experience, residential district and occupation influence disaster preparedness behaviors of Tehran inhabitants. Therefore, in order to achieve higher levels of individual disaster preparedness, it is crucial that governmental officials, emergency agencies, community leaders and educators pay more attention to low-income individuals, unemployed people, and individuals who live in high risk districts, especially those have not experienced disasters. Competing Interests The authors have declared that no competing interests exists. (Source: PLOS Currents Disasters)
