Comprehensive Treatment Strategy for Chronic Low Back Pain in a Patient with Bilateral Transfemoral Amputations Integrating Changes in Prosthetic Socket Design
Conclusions: A multidisciplinary team approach to the care of patients with bilateral transfemoral amputations can help to improve functional outcomes. For this patient with nonradicular, mechanical LBP, a subischial prosthetic socket design that minimized intrusion on the pelvis had a significant influence on static and dynamic sagittal spinopelvic alignment and overall outcomes. In the end, contributions by orthopedic and plastic surgeons, pain management strategies by a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, rehabilitation by a physical therapist, and prosthetic modifications all played a role in reduction of t...

Evaluation of the Immediate Effect of Bracing on Gait Symmetry, Lower-Limb Kinematics, and Trunk and Pelvic Motion during Level Walking in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis
Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that trunk bracing influences the pelvic range of motion and improved symmetry of range of motions of the pelvis. However, bracing did not influence the kinematic parameters of hip, knee, and ankle joints significantly. (Source: JPO Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics)

A Content Analysis on the Media Portrayal of Characters with Limb Loss
Conclusion: Positive portrayal did not increase over time. However, heroism did increase over time, whereas inaccurate depictions of prosthetic limbs were more frequent overall, regardless of time. This means that when a character with amputation was a hero, he/she was more likely using prosthetic technology that does not exist in reality. These data demonstrate a need to better educate the public and encourage more accurate depictions in the media. (Source: JPO Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics)

Shank-to-Vertical Angle in Ankle-Foot Orthoses: A Comparison of Static and Dynamic Assessment in a Series of Cases
Conclusions: Measuring the SVA of the AFO-FC in relaxed stance is an accurate way of determining the SVA at TMST. Clinical Relevance: Ankle-foot orthosis footwear combination tuning is considered an essential aspect of AFO prescriptions. The SVA is a key principle of AFO-FC tuning. The method for determining the SVA has yet to be tested to ensure that the static measurement correlates to the dynamic measurement during gait. (Source: JPO Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics)

Technique for Perforating a Prosthetic Liner to Expel Sweat
Conclusions: Initial clinical experience with this technique suggested that expulsion of sweat occurred and user feedback indicated improved prosthesis use as a result. Current experience using this technique in clinical practice has been limited to silicone liners. The long-term effects of perforations on liner durability or limb health are not yet known. Effects of Foot Orthoses Extrinsic Rearfoot and Forefoot Posts on Muscle Activity During Walking: A Case Study
Conclusions: The addition of extrinsic rearfoot and forefoot posts to the FOs can modulate muscle function during walking. However, to this day, not enough data are available to build a clinical guideline, and it is still unknown if they can have positive effects on musculoskeletal pathologies of the lower limb. Comparative Efficacy of Transfemoral Prosthetic Interfaces: Analysis of Gait and Perceived Disability
Conclusions: The HiFi Interface System presented some biomechanical advantages to traditional IRC socket designs in this case, which may allow for increased stability in patients utilizing a TF prosthesis. Further research with larger samples is warranted. (Source: JPO Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics)

Comparative Study of Functional Grasp and Efficiency Between a 3D-Printed and Commercial Myoelectric Transradial Prosthesis Using Able-Bodied Subjects: A Pilot Study
Introduction: Upper-limb amputations make up 10% to 20% of the total amputations in the United States. Of the two million individuals currently living with limb loss, 30% to 50% do not wear their prosthesis regularly. This is a result of lack of education, lack of training, discomfort, poor cosmetics, and cost. Three-dimensional (3D) printing may provide a cost-effective alternative for upper-limb prostheses. The purpose of this pilot study was to test and compare efficiency and functional capabilities of a 3D-printed and commercially available manufactured myoelectric hand. Materials and Methods: The research team design...
