The Use of a Stoma Rod/Bridge to Prevent Retraction: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Stoma rod does not seem to reduce the risk of stoma retraction and might result in other adverse events. IMPLICATIONS: We recommend avoidance of stoma rod/bridge placement during ostomy surgery. (Source: Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing)

Reducing Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Extravasation in Neonates: A Quality Improvement Project
PURPOSE Our objective was to reduce total and severe peripheral intravenous extravasation (PIVE) incidence by 40% in our neonatal intensive care unit. SETTING/APPROACH: This quality improvement initiative was performed at an academic, free-standing suburban children's hospital, in a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit from June 2017 to April 2018. Baseline extravasation data for a period of 6 months prior to the initiative were reviewed, along with a nursing knowledge questionnaire and random audits of catheter stabilization techniques. A Pareto chart and a key driver diagram were created to identify the most c...

Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries and Acute Skin Failure in Critical Care: A Case-Control Study
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine clinical characteristics and risk factors for critically ill patients who develop pressure injuries and identify the proportion of validated unavoidable pressure injuries associated with the proposed risk factors for acute skin failure (ASF). DESIGN: Retrospective case-control comparative study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised adult critically ill participants hospitalized in critical care units such as surgical, trauma, cardiovascular surgical, cardiac, neuro, and medical intensive care and corresponding progressive care units in 5 acute care ho...

Characteristics of Critically Ill Adults With Sacrococcygeal Unavoidable Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries: A Retrospective, Matched, Case-Control Study
CONCLUSION: Sacrococcygeal uHAPI development was associated with progressive multiorgan dysfunction/failure, greater use of supportive therapies, sepsis diagnosis, and mortality. Additional research investigating the role of multiorgan dysfunction/failure and sepsis on uHAPI development is warranted. (Source: Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing)

Use of Cryopreserved Human Umbilical Cord and Amniotic Membrane Allograft and Portable Negative Pressure Therapy in Dehisced Giant Omphalocele Repair: A Case Study
CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case study to evaluate the effect of cryopreserved human umbilical cord and amniotic membrane allograft in a dehisced neonatal abdominal wound due to a giant omphalocele or, in fact, neonatal wounds in general. Our experience with this case suggests that cryopreserved human umbilical cord and amniotic membrane allograft may create a superior healing trajectory and regeneration, avoidance of surgical intervention, and an early hospital discharge. Wound-supporting properties of amniotic allograft, in addition to lack of immunologic reactivity, offer an attracti...

What Are COVID Toes? A Case Study
CONCLUSION: Familiarity with COVID toes will help foot care providers to identify patients who may not have been diagnosed with COVID-19 but could still be infectious and need to be isolated. COVID toe signs may be subtle and often mimic other conditions such as chilblains/pernio, thus a thorough history and physical examination are required. Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression in Persons With Ostomies: A Cross-sectional Study
CONCLUSIONS: Anxiety and depression are prevalent in adults living with an ostomy; anxiety was more prevalent than depression. Respondents with less support from their family and those with anxiety were more likely to experience depression. (Source: Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing)

Ostomy Care During Hospital Stay for Ostomy Surgery and the United Ostomy Associations of America Patient Bill of Rights: A Cross-sectional Study
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates that ostomy care at the hospital can improve. Receiving an ostomy is a life-changing operation, and the first line of support for ostomy patients is their provider. Future research should examine ostomy care from providers' perspectives and, prospectively, in order to test care measures on patient health outcomes.
