Comparison of Shock Index With the Assessment of Blood Consumption Score for Association With Massive Transfusion During Hemorrhage Control for Trauma
Conclusion: Shock index ≥ 1 outperformed a positive ABC score for association with MT requirement. Shock index is a simple tool registered nurses can independently utilize to anticipate MT. (Source: Journal of Trauma Nursing)

Prehospital Hemorrhage Assessment Criteria: A Concise Review
Conclusions: Traditional assessment parameters such as heart rate, systolic blood pressure, shock index, and Glasgow Coma Scale score often lag in providing accurate blood loss assessment. The current literature supports the need for a noninvasive, continuously monitored assessment parameter to identify early shock in the prehospital setting. (Source: Journal of Trauma Nursing)

Venous Thromboembolism Chemoprophylaxis in Trauma and Emergency General Surgery Patients: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: There may be no benefit to receiving LMWH over UFH in trauma patients. In addition, different drugs under the class of LMWH do not change the incidence of VTE. Adjusted dosing of enoxaparin does not seem to affect VTE incidence. The use of DOACs in the trauma TBI and SCI setting has been shown to be safe and effective in reducing VTE. One important consideration with VTE prophylaxis may be the timing of prophylaxis initiation, specifically as it relates to TBI, with a higher likelihood of developing VTE as time progresses. EGS patients are at a high risk of VTE. Improved compliance with clinical guidelines...

The Pediatric Trauma Society Annual Meeting: An Analysis of Scholarly Output From the First 5 Years
Conclusion: Most of the scholarly effort presented at the PTS remains unpublished. Published work is mainly in low-impact factor journals. Mentorship in the publication process and encouragement of multidisciplinary collaboration within the society are needed to address limitations in the number and potential impact of the scientific content of the annual meeting. This type of analysis is relevant not only to the PTS but also to any professional society seeking to improve its impact. (Source: Journal of Trauma Nursing)

Evaluation of Patient Information Material in the Consent Process for Surgical Stabilization of Rib Fractures
Conclusion: In this novel study, visual aids as an adjunct to the informed consent process augmented patient knowledge regarding surgical stabilization of rib fractures and received positive subjective patient feedback on knowledge about the procedure. (Source: Journal of Trauma Nursing)

A Survey-Based Assessment of “Matter of Balance” Participant Fall-Related Experience
Conclusions: The participants in this study self-reported a decrease in fall rate, a decrease in fear of falling, and an increase in exercise frequency. The course is not fall protective but can be considered an adjunct to fall prevention measures that include medical, medication, visual, and environmental management. Evaluation of Prognosis of Coma Patients With Acute Brain Injury by Electroencephalogram Bispectral Index Monitoring
Conclusion: Taken together, our study indicates that BIS had good predictive value on prognosis. These findings suggested that BIS could be used to evaluate the severity and prognosis of severe brain injury. (Source: Journal of Trauma Nursing)

Reducing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection: The Impact of Routine Screening in the Geriatric Hip Fracture Population
Conclusions: Urinary tract infection on admission may be present among a large portion of geriatric hip fracture patients, leading to increased rates of CAUTI. Routine screening for UTI and its predisposing factors at admission can identify these patients earlier and lead to earlier treatments and prevention of CAUTI. (Source: Journal of Trauma Nursing)

Admission for Isolated Low-Grade Solid Organ Injury May Not Be Necessary in Pediatric Patients
Conclusion: Among a cohort of 51 patients with isolated blunt Grade I or II solid organ injuries, none required a significant intervention justifying need for admission. All “complication or intervention” patients observed were of limited clinical significance. We recommend that hemodynamically stable patients with isolated low-grade solid organ injuries may be discharged from the emergency department after a brief observation along with appropriate instructions and pain management.
