Association of neighborhood opportunity and pediatric hospitalization rates in the United States
We examined associations between a validated, multidimensional measure of social determinants of health and population-based hospitalization rates among children<18 years across 18 states from the 2017 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Databases and the US Census. The exposure was ZIP code-level Child Opportunity Index (COI), a composite measure of neighborhood resources and conditions that matter for children's health. The cohort included 614,823 hospitalizations among a population of 29,244,065 children (21.02 hospitalizations per 1000). Adjusted hospitalization rates decreased significantly and ...

Prevalence of homelessness among hospitalized patients: A point ‐in‐time survey
AbstractAlthough homelessness is associated with increased acute healthcare utilization and poorer health outcomes, the prevalence of homelessness and housing insecurity in hospitalized patients is poorly characterized. We conducted an in-person survey to determine the prevalence of housing insecurity and homelessness among hospitalized patients at two hospitals in metropolitan Denver in conjunction with the Housing and Urban Development point-in-time  count on January 24, 2022. Of the 271 surveyed patients, 79 (29.2%) reported experiencing either housing insecurity (17.3%) or homelessness (11.8%). Of those experiencing h...

De ‐implementing low‐value continuous pulse oximetry practice in infants hospitalized with bronchiolitis: A multicentre qualitative study
ConclusionsUnderstanding professional roles, clarity around local practice standards and supporting families'  understanding of pulse oximetry practice is essential for practice change. These findings may inform hospital quality improvement efforts to de-implement continuous monitoring in bronchiolitis hospital care. (Source: Journal of Hospital Medicine)

Impact of a hospital service for adults with chronic childhood ‐onset disease: A propensity weighted analysis
ConclusionHospitalization for young adults with CCOD on a MP service line was associated with lower 30-day readmission rates and longer LOS than hospitalization on other services. Further research is needed to assess which components of the line most contribute to decreased utilization. (Source: Journal of Hospital Medicine)

Achieving diagnostic excellence through prevention and teamwork (ADEPT)  study protocol: A multicenter, prospective quality and safety program to improve diagnostic processes in medical inpatients
AbstractBackgroundFew hospitals have built surveillance for diagnostic errors into usual care or used comparative quantitative and qualitative data to understand their diagnostic processes and implement interventions designed to reduce these errors.ObjectivesTo build surveillance for diagnostic errors into usual care, benchmark diagnostic performance across sites, pilot test interventions, and evaluate the program's impact on diagnostic error rates. Methods and AnalysisAchieving diagnostic excellence through prevention and teamwork (ADEPT)  is a multicenter, real-world quality and safety program utilizing interrupted time-...

Advancing health information during interhospital transfer: An interrupted time series
This study aims to design, implement, and rigorously evaluate the implementation of a HIE platform to improve data access during IHT.Methods and AnalysisStudy subjects include patients aged  >18 transferred to the medical, cardiology, oncology, or intensive care unit (ICU) services at an 800-bed quaternary care hospital; and healthcare workers involved in their care. The first aim of this study is to optimize clinician workflow, data visualization, and interoperability through user-centered design sessions for HIE platform development. The second aim is to evaluate the impact of the intervention on clinician-reported ...

How do we detect and respond to clinical deterioration in hospitalized children? Results of the Pediatric Care BefOre Deterioration Events (CODE) survey
In conclusion, most pediRES-Q institutions utilize systems to detect/respond to deteriorating hospitalized children. Heterogeneity exists among programs. Rigorous evaluation is needed to identify best practices. (Source: Journal of Hospital Medicine)

Characteristics, disposition, and outcomes of children hospitalized for mental health boarding at a children's hospital
We examined associations between patients' characteristics and their di sposition and outcomes. Our cohort included 1891 boarding hospitalizations: 53.9% transferred to an inpatient psychiatric hospital and 46.1% discharged home. Characteristics associated with not being transferred to an inpatient psychiatric hospital included age<13 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.6; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.4 –0.7), disruptive or aggressive behavior (aOR 0.6; 95% CI: 0.4–0.8), psychosis (aOR 0.5; 95% CI: 0.3–0.8), COVID-19 infection (aOR 0.3; 95% CI: 0.2–0.6), or a complex chronic medical condition (aOR 0.8; 95% C...

Hospital ‐based opioid treatment: Expanding and sustaining the model in Texas
AbstractThisBrief Report includes follow-up data about the sustainability and expansion of the Buprenorphine Team (B-Team), a hospital-based opioid treatment (HBOT) program. Between September 2018 and January 2023, the B-Team started 398 patients with opioid-use disorder (OUD) on buprenorphine therapy and coordinated outpatient care for 353 patients before discharge. Two-hundred and forty-nine of these patients were scheduled for follow-up at our partner addiction treatment clinic. Retention rates at our partner clinic remain relatively high: 73 patients (36% of eligible patients) continued to attend appointments between 6...
