I Join, So I Enjoy: How Customer Participation Increases Wellbeing
AbstractMuch of the existing literature on customer participation has focused on the performance outcomes from the standpoint of companies, ignoring the benefits of customers as the critical participants. Drawing from work on meaning and self-determination theory, the paper examines the influence of customer participation on two components of customer well-being: affective states and meaning of participation. Two studies show that customer participation significantly improved customers ’ affective states and meaning of participation, and psychological ownership was one of the underlying mechanisms. Product type further m...

Geographic Reference Income and the Subjective Wellbeing of Australians
This study’s methodology takes advantage of panel-data modelling to show that unobserved individual heterogeneity is in fact correlated with reference income, but on curbing its impacts through the inclusion of fixed-effects we fi nd that there is still a positive relationship between reference income and subjective wellbeing at the neighbourhood level. However, we detect no relationship at the region-wide level. Additionally, the subjective wellbeing relationship is the same no matter an individual’s rank in the distributi on of incomes within an area. The neighbourhood wellbeing relationship has implications for poli...

Profiles of Happy Consumers in a Developing Country, The Case of Ecuador
AbstractThe idea that not all types of consumption benefit well-being is not new. However, its recent formalization within the framework of the behavioral and social sciences has led to a rapid expansion of knowledge about the goods that are most effective in increasing happiness. Most evidence has been obtained from the developed world and with a focus on broad categories that ignore meaningful heterogeneities. This paper contributes to this domain by conducting a detailed analysis of the relationship that happiness has with a variety of market goods and with aggregate measures of purchasing power. We do this using the da...

The Role of ‘Positivity’ and Big Five Traits during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Italian National Representative Survey
DiscussionPositivity has a protective role in buffering the negative effects of the pandemic on people ’s affective response, as well as supporting stronger self-efficacy and confidence about the usefulness of the vaccine, and higher preventive behaviours, over and above personality traits. Nostalgia and Online Autobiography: Implications for Global Self-Continuity and Psychological Well-Being
AbstractPersonal narratives constitute one of the most fundamental means of making sense of one ’s experiences. In the digital age, documenting life online has emerged as a new form of personal narrative. However, what contributes to documenting life online and its implications has remained unaddressed. With self-reported scales (Studies 1–2) and the behavioral indicator from social media (i.e., posts on Weibo, a Twitter-like online platform in China; Study 2), we examined the relationship between documenting life online and nostalgia, as well as implications for global self-continuity (i.e., a sense of connectedness a...

Monetizing Utility Reductions Associated with Bullying
AbstractAlthough rarely measured, victims ’ suffering is likely a large part of the overall cost of bullying. We use the compensating income variation method on data from the Icelandic SAGA (Stress-And-Gene-Analysis) cohort to estimate the monetary compensation needed to offset the welfare loss associated with bullying of women. We examin e differences by frequency and extensivity of bullying, the type of bullying, the victim´s age during most recent bullying and years since most recent bullying. We find considerable differences in results across those bullying characteristics. To put this in context, the yearly value o...

Promoting Well-Being in a Clinical Sample of Young Adults with Paranoid Tendencies: A Randomised Clinical Trial
AbstractEarly adulthood is a critical transitional period, when the individual faces many challenges related to their development as a fully autonomous individual. However, it can also be an important period for developing resilience, positive interpersonal and behavioral patterns, especially for people who have difficulty trusting others. Thus, the early introduction of positive resources and practices can have both immediate and prophylactic effects for young adults. This is randomized control study aimed to examine the efficacy of a theory-driven, multi-component, positive psychology group intervention to improve well-b...

Dualfactor Model of Mental Health in Chinese Employees: A Latent Profile Analysis
AbstractThe dual-factor model emphasizes the integration of negative and positive indicators in the conceptualization of mental health. Yet, no research to date has used this model to describe employees with varying mental health characteristics. The current study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify groups of employees who shared certain mental health characteristics (i.e., who had the same profile), and also examined whether these profiles differed on sociodemographic and work-related factors. Participants were 15,123 full-time employees (58.6% women, aged 18 –64 years) from 14 cities in Hunan province, China...

Measuring Financial Well-Being: A Systematic Review of Psychometric Instruments
AbstractIn the last two decades financial well-being (FWB) has attracted considerable attention. However, many studies use ad hoc instruments to measure the construct, with may lead to mistaken conclusions. This review aims to identify and assess the psychometric properties of the instruments available to measure FWB. We also assess the dimensions (theoretical and empirical) and FWB definitions used by these instruments. Seven databases (PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Embase, Virtual Health Library, Scielo, and Web of Science) were searched for construction, validation, or adaption studies of FWB instruments. This review protoc...

How Does Interpersonal Gratitude Relate to Adolescent Life Satisfaction? The Roles of Parent –Child Relationship and Attachment Insecurity
AbstractExisting literature on the relationship between interpersonal gratitude and life satisfaction in adolescents has been limited in terms of scope and methodology. Based on the psycho-social model proposed by Alkozei et al. (J Happiness Stud 19:1 –24, 2018) and the attachment security enhancement model, this study used a three-wave longitudinal design to test both the mediating role of parent–child relationship and the moderating effect of attachment insecurity in the link between interpersonal gratitude (e.g., gratitude to parents) and life satisfaction among adolescents. A total of 1131 Chinese adolescents (Mage...

Apply Your Strengths to Enjoy Flow at Work: A Diary Study on the Relationship Between Strengths Use and Innovative Behavior
AbstractStrengths use at work has a significant positive impact on employees ’ job performance. However, little research has been done on the effect of strengths use on performance beyond routine tasks, such as innovative behavior. In this daily diary study, we examined the relationship between daily strengths use and daily innovative behavior, building on the broaden-and- build theoretical framework. We proposed a moderated mediation model where the link between one’s daily strengths use and daily innovative behavior is mediated by daily flow at work and moderated by daily gratitude toward the organization (GTO). We c...

Don ’t be Lazy! Effort as a Pivotal Element for Present and Future Well-being
AbstractThe link between effort and individual well-being has been the subject of contentious debate. Economic and some psychological models analyze effort as a cost or a disutility, while other philosophical and psychological theories argue that personal effort is a pivotal element for a flourishing life. These theories also distinguish between higher and lower pleasures. To assess the contested contribution of effort to personal well-being, we analyze survey data gathered from 1954 working adults aged 25 to 65 in Israel. We analyze their subjective assessments of the effort they exert in different life domains and suppor...

Relationship Status and Psychological Well-being: Initial Evidence for the Moderating Effects of Commitment Readiness
AbstractPast research has suggested that the association between romantic relationship status (i.e., single vs. coupled) and well-being can be dependent on different aspects of an individual ’s personal life. In the current research, we examined whether commitment readiness (i.e., the subjective sense that the current time is “right” to be in a committed romantic relationship) moderates the link between current relationship status and psychological well-being. With correlational d ata obtained from three independent samples (two from Singapore, one cross-cultural comparison between Singapore and USA), we found a sign...

The Role of the Quiet Ego in Promoting Benefits from Social Participation: A Win-win Game for Sustained Social Participation
The objectives of this study are: 1) to analyze the measurement quality of the Quiet Ego Scale (QES) in a sample of Spanish individuals with different levels of prosocial participation (Study 1; N  = 238); and 2) to analyze how the QES is related to participants’ perceived benefits and costs and their intention to continue participating in prosocial activities, in a new sample of individuals who actively participate as volunteers, community leaders, activists, and so on (Study 2; N =  288). Our findings showed that the QES has adequate psychometric properties for use in samples of Spanish individuals who perform ...
