Environmental impact assessment of a steel industry development plan using combined method involving Leopold matrix and RIAM
AbstractThe present study was conducted to determine positive and negative impacts of Sepid-Farab Kavir steel (SKS) complex development plan and to propose suitable managerial strategies by a combined method involving Leopold matrix and Rapid Impact Assessment matrix (RIAM). The SKS complex is located in Aran-Bidgol city, Isfahan, Iran. Two scenarios of project implementation and project cancellation were formulated for SKS complex development plan, which has two sub-phases: construction and operation Using Leopold and RIAM matrices, the direct and indirect impacts of the project on the study area was investigated. The imp...

COVID-19 aerodynamic evaluation of social distancing in indoor environments, a numerical study
ConclusionsWithin an indoor environment, 1.5  m distance will not be enough to protect the healthy individuals from the droplets coming from an infected person. Also, the situation may become worse with the change of the air ventilation system. (Source: Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering)

Investigating the effects of vermicomposting process using Eisenia Fetida earthworms on the reduction of parasites population
ConclusionThe results showed that the mixture of sewage sludge and cow dung in combination with sawdust could lead to greater and faster reduction in the parasite ’s population. In addition, the bio-transformed product can be used as useful manure. (Source: Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering)

Effect of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) waves on some blood factors in domestic pigeons: an experimental study
ConclusionsStudy showed that increasing exposure time and decreasing distance from the wave source have significant effect on hematologic factors. The distance has more effect than exposure time. Further investigation on protection and reducing the side effects are recommended. (Source: Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering)

Urban air pollution control policies and strategies: a systematic review
AbstractA wide range of policies, strategies, and interventions have been implemented to improve air quality all over the world. This systematic review comprehensively appraises the policies and strategies on air pollutants controls enacted in different countries, worldwide. Three databases, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus, were used for the search. After screening, a total of 114 eligible manuscripts were selected from 2219 documents for further analysis. Selected articles were divided into two categories: (1) articles focusing on introducing the policies and strategies enacted for controlling air pollution in different...

Identification of microplastics in conventional drinking water treatment plants in Tehran, Iran
This study investigates these particles in three different conventional DWTPs in the city of Tehran, Iran, and aims to analyze these particles down to the size of 1  µm. A scanning electron microscope was utilized in this study to quantitatively analyze MPs. Accordingly, the average abundance of MPs in raw and treated water samples varied from 1996 ± 268 to 2808 ± 80 MPs L−1 and 971  ± 103 to 1401 ± 86 MPs L−1, respectively. While particles smaller than 10  µm comprised 65–87% of MPs. Moreover, µ-Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize MPs. As the results, polypropylene, polyethylene tere...

Introduction of nitrogen doped graphene nanosheets as efficient adsorbents for nitrate removal from aqueous samples
ConclusionsThis study revealed which 3D-HND-G leads to improved yield in the nitrate ions elimination, particularly at acidic media, which was related to the enhanced dispersibility and larger surface area. The adsorbent was further successfully used for treating tap and underground water samples. At the present moment, research as grown to modify 3D-HND-G in orders to increase the potentiality for industrial applications. (Source: Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering)

Effects of diesel-engine exhaust emissions on seed germination and seedling growth of Brassicaceae family using digital image analysis
AbstractThis paper describes a multi-phase investigation into the direct effect of diesel exhaust emission on seed germination traits and biochemical changes responsible for observed effects in seeds belongs to the Brassica family. Diesel exhaust emissions were collected in germination boxes and seeds were exposed to diesel exhaust pollutants for durations of 30 to 120  min with 30 min intervals. Observed effects include seed germination inhibition, changes in seeds’ antioxidants activity, and protein content. The lowest seed germination of canola (71 %) and arugula (84 %) was observed when seeds were exposed to 12...

Monitoring of urinary arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) among a sample of pregnant Iranian women
ConclusionThe lifestyle determinants and cosmetic products use are important predictors of urinary heavy metals in pregnant women, rather than sociodemographic characteristics. Additional research is necessary to determine long-term adverse birth outcomes of exposure to these heavy metals. (Source: Journal of Environmental Health Science and Engineering)

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in the sediments of a Mediterranean lagoon complex
This study examines the heavy metal contamination in the surface sediments of six coastal lagoons in Northern Greece (Nestos River and Vistonikos complexes) in relation to particle size distribution, organic carbon, total phosphorus and total Kjeldahl nitrogen. Furthermore, the contamination degrees and the ecological risks were assessed using different indicators. The study of heavy metals in lagoon ’s sediments is important in evaluating natural contamination against anthropogenic impact, and consequently, providing knowledge that could lead to management measures to reduce heavy metal environmental risks. Lafri Lagoon...
