Case Study: Effectiveness and Functioning of Biomedical Engineering Services and Impact on Quality Care at Fortis Escorts Hospital
This study was undertaken to analyze the effectiveness and functioning of engineering services and its impact on overall quality care. For this purpose, various parameters like maintenance strategy, repair and replacement policy used, frequency and reasons for equipment failure, maintenance cost, risk incurred due to failure, availability of alternative equipment, training, and skill development were assessed. Constructive results were obtained from the study, validating that engineering services do have an influential role in the health sector; without them, health quality will decline. Therefore, the reputation of a hosp...

Skin Lesions Classification Based on Deep Learning Approach
As one kind of skin cancer, melanoma is very dangerous. Dermoscopy-based early detection and reorganization strategy is critical for melanoma therapy. Skin imaging is essential in order to diagnose the tumor type; this had to be accomplished by taking a biopsy from patients. This procedure is very uncomfortable for patients and requires time and highly qualified dermatologists to precisely differentiate between different types of skin cancer. In order to solve these problems, many efforts focused on developing automatic image analysis systems that reduce the suffering of patients, time, and tumor classification error. Here...

The Human Factor: The Critical Importance of Effective Teamwork and Communication in Providing Quality and Safe Care
This article outlines and presents various ways of reducing communication errors and failures, the importance of teamwork, and communication among direct patient care personnel. The study was descriptive and exploratory in nature with a sample size of 200. The efficient use of teamwork and communication had enhanced the level of quality of care for patients. Results of this article confirmed that the level of patient care improved by teamwork and communication. Consequently, conflicts occurred exclusively during the handover between nursing staff, and after their switch, the nursing staffs were usually in zeal to leave. (S...

A Dynamic System Based Model for Reducing Medical Laboratory Turnaround Time in Developing Countries
This study covered healthcare facilities in Egypt as a sample of developing countries. A dynamic system simulation model was used in this work. This model was designed to reduce TAT by studying the 8 most critical parameters that affect TAT. A causal loop diagram was developed using real laboratory data collected from 15 different hospitals in Egypt. The 8 key parameters are number of samples, number of equipment, total staff count, staff performance, environmental conditions, preanalytical and postanalytical time, equipment defect increase rate, and number of rack samples. The results showed that TAT is directly proportio...

The Compounding Power of the Clinical Community: Case Review
Healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals are critical stakeholders in promoting patient safety, regularly troubleshooting medical devices that are unsafe or unable to be used by clinical staff. Healthcare technology management professionals determine, investigate, and often address the root cause (or causes) of medical device concern(s), so that the devices can be used safely and effectively throughout the facility. The HTM professional's investigation, when accompanied by medical device reports, often leads to manufacturer actions, including recalls and corrections, which contribute to continuous improvement o...
