Trends in Physical Activity Among US Adults With Heart Failure, 2007-2016
Conclusions: Self-reported PA, especially vigorous activities, is much lower in older HF participants. However, the disparity in meeting PA guidelines between those with HF and without HF is remarkable in younger individuals. Future research should focus on better understanding the psychological and physical barriers to engaging in PA among HF patients. (Source: Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation)

Cardiac Rehabilitation Following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Is Associated With Superior Psychological Health and Quality of Life in Males but Not in Females
Conclusions: Continued efforts are required to improve anxiety and mental HR-QoL in females treated with PCI participating in CR. (Source: Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation)

Health Literacy Among Patients With Chronic Lung Disease Entering Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Their Resident Loved Ones
Conclusion: Low HL and low reading ability are common among patients entering PR and their loved ones. For patients with low or adequate HL, PR is an effective treatment. Whether considering low HL and low reading ability by offering tailored education during treatment could augment the benefits of PR warrants further study. Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes in a Canadian Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
Conclusions: Patients with diabetes, particularly younger patients who currently smoke or recently quit, are more likely to report having anxiety following CR. These patients may therefore require additional management of anxiety symptoms during CR. Larger studies of CR patients with diabetes and more variable depression and anxiety levels are needed. Predictors of Cardiac Rehabilitation Participation: OPPORTUNITIES TO INCREASE ENROLLMENT
Conclusions: Lack of CR referral, lower educational attainment, nonsurgical diagnosis, current smoking, and reduced ejection fraction can predict patients at a highest risk of CR nonparticipation. Specific interventions such as electronic referral and a strong in-person recommendation from a medical provider may enhance CR participation rates. Area Deprivation Index and Cardiovascular Events: CAN CARDIAC REHABILITATION MITIGATE THE EFFECTS?
Introduction: Neighborhood socioeconomic status is associated with health outcomes. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) provides a cost-effective, multidisciplinary approach to improve outcomes in cardiovascular disease. We aimed to evaluate the association of the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a marker of neighborhood social composition, with risk of recurrent cardiovascular outcomes and assessed the modifying effect of CR. Methods: We identified patients with a primary diagnosis of (1) myocardial infarction or (2) incident heart failure (HF) admitted to a large-sized regional health center during 2010-2018. We derived ...

Financial Analysis of Cardiac Rehabilitation and the Impact of COVID-19
Conclusions: COVID-19-related safety protocols required CR programs to modify service delivery. Results demonstrate that it was possible to safely maintain this critically important service; however, CR program costs exceeded revenues. The challenge going forward is to optimize CR service delivery to increase participation and achieve financial solvency. (Source: Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation)

Review of Recent Cardiac Rehabilitation Research Related to Enrollment/Adherence, Mental Health, and Other Populations
This review overviews three topic areas observed to be highly active in the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) research literature published in 2019 and 2020. Topics summarized were enrollment or adherence in CR programs; mental health, particularly depression, stress, and anxiety of patients participating in CR programs; and patients participating in CR programs with diagnoses other than coronary artery bypass graft, myocardial infarction, or percutaneous coronary interventions. The Treatment of Obesity in Cardiac Rehabilitation: A REVIEW AND PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusions: Cardiac rehabilitation programs need to take on an important challenge of secondary prevention, which is to develop behavioral weight loss programs to assist cardiac patients to lose weight and, thereby, improve multiple risk factors and long-term prognosis.
