The Explosion of a New Designer Drug, Flakka: Implications for Practice
There are many challenges facing healthcare professionals. One such challenge is the continuous introduction of new synthetic drugs. Synthetic drugs pose many difficulties to providers, including identification of the drug ingested, management of symptoms, ensuring safety of the patient and his or her environment, and continual monitoring after the initial symptoms, because synthetic cathinones have many long-term effects on an individual. One such synthetic drug, flakka, is a potent second-generation synthetic cathinone. Because flakka inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, which are involved in one’s per...

Gender Differences in Smartphone Addiction Behaviors Associated With Parent–Child Bonding, Parent–Child Communication, and Parental Mediation Among Korean Elementary School Students
Conclusion: The study provides insights into SA behaviors and predictors of SA behaviors among children based on gender differences. Development of SA behavior prevention programs is needed, not only for children but also to teach parents to use active safety mediation and restrictive mediation for boys and better communication and active use mediation for girls. Youth Substance Use Prevention Using Disciplinary Literacy Strategies: A Pilot Study
Effective health education programs for adolescent substance use prevention need to be developed. However, the evidence supporting the use of specific instructional strategies for youth substance use prevention programs is insufficient. The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a community-based program aiming for smoking, alcohol, and substance use prevention based on multiple disciplinary literacy strategies. A one-group pretest-and-posttest comparison design was used to test the feasibility of the new substance use prevention program. Thirty-two adolescents, most from families with minority and low-socioeco...

Treatment Options for Opioid Use Disorders: A Review of the Relevant Literature
Approximately 10% of the 20 million Americans who are suffering from substance use disorders are suffering from prescription opioid and heroine misuse. This has led to a rise in overdoses as well as emergency room visits, with over 1000 individuals across the United States being seen in emergency rooms every day. Unfortunately, about 90% of drug overdoses are unintentional. Therefore, finding effective ways to treat opioid use disorders and preventing relapse has now become a national priority. This review of the relevant literature highlights current treatment options available for opioid use disorders, including motivati...

The Opioid Crisis, Suicides, and Related Conditions: Multiple Clustered Syndemics, not Singular Epidemics
In early April 2018, Dr. Maria Oquendo, President of the American Psychiatric Association, and Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, published a thought-provoking article in the New England Journal of Medicine about the role of suicide in the opioid overdose epidemic, referring to the relationship between them as a “hidden tragedy.” Drs. Oquendo and Volkow drew our attention to the twinning of the opioid (and other drug) overdose and suicide epidemics, but these are not the first or only drug-related “twin epidemics.” Numerous other related conditions, including pain disorders, adverse ...

Caught in the Crossfire of the Syndemic
The worsening opioid epidemic ignites infectious disease development and transmission as opioids abused by insufflation and/or injection establish a pathway for infection to the user and propagate vulnerability to diseases. The phenomenon of the synergistic collision of epidemics intensifying the load of disease constitutes a syndemic. Merrill Signer (1994) voiced the term “syndemic” to characterize the complex nexus of politics, economics, psychosocial/environmental factors, and health disparities resulting in the inner-city AIDS crisis of the 1990s. Today, the surge of opioid use puts individuals at risk for disease ...

Evaluating Emergency Department Opioid Prescribing Behaviors After Education About Mandated Use of the Pennsylvania Prescription Drug Monitoring Program
Conclusion: An education program increased ED providers’ knowledge of the opioid epidemic and the Pennsylvania PDMP mandate and identified barriers to use. A decrease in opioid prescriptions written may have been associated with improved knowledge and suggests that providers can change prescribing behaviors. More research is needed in this area, and future projects may want to focus on prescriber attitudes toward PDMP usefulness. (Source: Journal of Addictions Nursing)

Evaluation of an Opiate Overdose Educational Intervention and Naloxone Prescribing Program in Homeless Adults Who Use Opiates
Opiate overdose deaths are considered an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Homeless adults are disproportionately affected by opioid overdoses. The purpose of this project was to implement an opiate overdose training and routine naloxone prescribing program for patients at a Health Care for the Homeless clinic. Education consisted of overdose risk factors, signs of overdose, how to respond to an opiate overdose, and how to administer naloxone. Knowledge was measured with a pretest and a posttest. Intranasal naloxone was prescribed for each person who received the education, and prescription fill r...
