Expanded Conceptual Framework for Ethical Action by Nurses on the “Further Upstream and Farther Downstream” Determinants of Health Equity
Determinants of health (DOH) are key predictors of health, wellness, morbidity, and mortality. The more familiar social DOH are not the only DOH. By themselves, the social DOH do not adequately explain how individuals and populations achieve and maintain health equity or inequity. Other DOH also exert political, economic, and institutional forces at all levels of the socioecological systems in which humans interact with their environment. Nurses' Role in Addressing Social Determinants of Health: A Case Study on the Social Determinants of Health Taskforce of Baltimore City
In recent years there has been increased interest in the social determinants of health (SDoH) by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Effects of Unemployment on Opioid Use Treatment Trajectories: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Living with an opioid use disorder (OUD) can make finding and sustaining employment a significant challenge and is only expected to get worse in the COVID-19 environment. For most individuals in OUD treatment, being employed is an important part of their recovery journey. Employment has several benefits, including reductions in preoccupation with symptoms, social isolation, risk of suicide, hopelessness, and economic instability, which if not addressed often result in homelessness. Therefore, employment is an important social determinant of health, especially among those with OUD. Employment success and OUD, however, may v...

Where It Really Counts: Feasibility and Potential of the Peer Engaged Empowered Recovery Program for Substance-Dependent Jail Inmates
Conclusion The PEER pilot program was well targeted. The average level of health and social need among clients was high, and many were difficult for PRS to contact. Culturally Responsive Practices in Treatment of Substance Use Disorders: Serving Indigenous Populations in the United States
This article highlights the limitations of culturally relevant care for Indigenous people in the prevention, treatment, and recovery of substance use disorders. It provides recommendations for consideration that expand the capacity for cultural humility. The “one-size-fits-all” approach to providing services, employed by most health and human service providers who are non-Indigenous, has failed. These limitations are often because of a lack of understanding of the larger historical and cultural context of Indigenous people. The authors emphasize the importance of health and human service providers' acquisition of the r...
