Financial incentives as a governmental tool to bridge the medical manpower gap between Israel ’s center and periphery
AbstractOne of the major health disparities between Israel ’s center and periphery relates to the physician to population ratio. To overcome it, the Israeli government launched a financial incentive program in 2011, in an attempt to encourage physicians to work in the periphery and in specialties experiencing major shortages. A recent IJHPR study found th at residents who choose to work in a peripheral institution gave more weight to the grant in their decision-making process than did residents from central institutions. This finding lends support to the rationale behind the government program and suggests that it is an ...

Hierarchy of hair loss stigma: media portrayals of cancer, alopecia areata, and ringworm in Israeli newspapers
ConclusionsOur results revealed a hierarchy of stigmas against hair loss, in which the media coverage marginalized this experience. The omission of hair loss by the media may explain, at least in part, why health professionals often ignore the psychosocial needs of these patients. Health insurance funding of wigs is a helpful but nevertheless insufficient solution to coping with feminine hair loss. Our findings may encourage media leaders to conduct planned media interventions to increase awareness of clinicians and health policymakers about the unique challenges faced by women coping with hair loss and promote health poli...

Correlates of gastroenterology health-services utilization among patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease: a large database analysis
ConclusionsPatient and physician ’s characteristics were related to high utilization of gastroenterology services among GERD patients. The associations with age and country of birth might reflect more severe disease. The regional differences warrant further research and interventions at the district level. Training in gastroenter ology of primary care physicians without a board certification is warranted. (Source: Israel Journal of Health Policy Research)

No-shows in ambulatory clinics and non-utilized appointments for elective operations in selected surgical departments at a tertiary hospital in Israel
ConclusionsIn this study, the non-utilized appointment rate for elective operations was found to be lower than those noted in the medical literature, while the no-show rate for ambulatory visits was found to be similar to that found in the literature. There is room to question the necessity of certain types of postoperative follow-up appointments since they are at “high risk” for no-show. One promising way to reduce the no-show rate would involve improving the hospital’s information and computing systems in order to identify patients who are susceptible to a no-show incident. Geographic variation of hysterectomy rates in the Israeli health care system during the years 2007 –2016
ConclusionsHysterectomy rates have declined in the past decade due to the implementation of new technologies allowing earlier diagnosis and minimally invasive surgery on top of offering alternative, non-surgical treatment modalities. Uneven allocation of resources and manpower allowing technology implementation and optimal medical services may have contributed to the findings. (Source: Israel Journal of Health Policy Research)
