Addressing overcrowding in an emergency department: an approach for identifying and treating influential factors and a real-life application
ConclusionsIt is expected that, by taking all the above factors into consideration, emergency departments efficiency can be improved. The algorithm constructed here allows the choice of the most cost-effective factors to be improved, subject to a given budget. We have been able to derive practical recommendations that emergency departments managers might use to limit crowding and patient length-of-stay. (Source: Israel Journal of Health Policy Research)

Caries prevalence among 18  years old, an epidemiological survey in Israel
ConclusionsThe current study presents encouraging low DMFT levels. Participants in this study were not included in the dental care services reform, and did enjoy the benefits of water fluoridation, enabling the results to play an important baseline data for future reference. Additionally, results should be considered when planning intervention programs for at risk groups.Trial registrationThis study was registered inClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier No.NCT02958891, November 8th, 2016) and was approved by the IDF Institutional Review Board (#1524 –2015). At the crossroads of religion and palliative care in patients with dementia
AbstractThe timing of palliative care initiation may be more appropriately directed using a needs-based approach, instead of a prognostically driven one. Jewish Law or Halachah ( “the way”) upholds a strong commitment to the sanctity of life and teaches that the duty to prolong life supersedes the duty to end suffering prematurely, unless one is expected to imminently die. This intersection of palliative care and a reliance on prognostic triggers with an individual’s o bservance of religious traditions complicates matters nearing the end-of-life. A recent pilot study by Sternberg et al. of 20 patients with advanced d...

Obstacles to using online health services among adults age 50 and up and the role of family support in overcoming them
ConclusionsThe results of the current study reveal important nuances regarding the importance of awareness, user interface and experience for OHS use among older adults, as well as the critical role of family members in OHS adoption. Based on these findings, we recommend the following: expanding advertising on media channels to emphasize the benefits of OHS use; improving HMO websites to make them more user-friendly for older people; developing HMO-run community OHS guidance programs geared to older people to reduce the gap between required skills and user competencies, thus enabling older people to benefit from OHS use. Trends and socioeconomic disparities in diabetes prevalence and quality of care among Israeli children; 2011-2018
ConclusionsWhile poor glycemic control rates among children have improved, they remain high compared to rates in adults. Additionally, substantial socioeconomic gaps remain. It is eminent to study the causes of these disparities and develop policies to improve care provided to children in the lower SEP levels, to promote health equity. Patient-centered care in Israeli IVF units: divergent perceptions of patients and providers
ConclusionsProviders appear to underestimate the needs of fertility treatment patients for information, respect, and emotional support. The observed differences between what patients feel about their care and what providers assume they provide, especially regarding emotional support, indicates a need for ongoing, specific feedback to providers as to the patient-centeredness of the care they provide. The particularly large patient – provider gap relative to the provision of emotional support highlights the importance of increasing the attention paid to the psychological impact of fertility treatment and of giving patients...

Tuberculosis treatment outcomes of non-citizen migrants: Israel compared to other high-income countries
ConclusionsThere is a need to standardize results based on international definitions of migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in order to determine status-specific barriers and to facilitate international comparisons. Policies insuring free access to TB care for non-citizen migrants are an important element for TB elimination in low incidence countries. (Source: Israel Journal of Health Policy Research)

Characteristics and outcome of elderly patients admitted for acute Cholecystitis to medical or surgical wards
ConclusionElderly patients with acute cholecystitis who require conservative management, especially those with severe functional and mental impairment can be safely hospitalized in medical departments. Outcome was not inferior in terms of mortality and LOH. These results have practical policy implications for the placement of elderly patients with acute cholecystitis in medical rather than surgical departments. Association between trust in the public healthcare system and selecting a surgeon in public hospitals in Israel: a cross-sectional population study
ConclusionsPublic trust in the public health system is a fundamental condition for maintaining an efficient and equitable health system in Israel. The survey suggests that uncertainty regarding the identity of the surgeon who will perform a procedure in a public hospital may be linked to a sense of insecurity and distrust of the public in the public health system. This study did not examine the causal relationship between the various factors, but the study data suggests a possible link between lower trust in the system and a lower perception of its equitability, and a subsequent associated increase in the public ’s desir...

Socio-economic disparities and returning to work following an injury
ConclusionsThis study identified population groups with a high probability of not RTW following an injury requiring hospitalization. Intervention programs for injured employees should promote early rehabilitation and aim to shorten out of work stay. These programs should be ethnically adapted and focus on underprivileged and disadvantaged populations. (Source: Israel Journal of Health Policy Research)

Hair loss due to scalp ringworm irradiation in childhood: health and psychosocial risks for women
ConclusionsLife with hair loss from scalp ringworm irradiation in childhood has a negative impact on women ’s health status and psychosocial state. Health policy-makers must broaden their approach to women who underwent scalp ringworm irradiation by addressing the effects of their hair loss in addition to the effects of the radiation treatment per se. This may be achieved by guiding physicians who prov ide medical services to these women to take into account the psychosocial and health risks related to hair loss in their diagnosis and treatment as well as by creating a cadre of specially trained mental health professiona...

The patient –physician relationship: an account of the physician’s perspective
ConclusionsIn contrast to patients who traditionally stress the importance of interpersonal skills, physicians stress the significance of the technical expertise and knowledge of health providers, emphasizing the role of competence and performance. Physicians evaluate the relationship on the basis of their ability to solve problems through devotion, serviceability, reliability, and trustworthiness and disregard the “softer” interpersonal aspects such as caring, appreciation, and empathy that have been found to be important to their patients. This illustrates a mismatch in the important components of relationship buildi...
