Practice nurse involvement in the management of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending a general practice: results from a systematic review
Conclusion: Meta-analysis identified modest, significant improvements amongst participants in nurse management interventions (NMIs) in the following clinical outcomes: mean SBP, mean DBP and mean total cholesterol. The majority of outcomes studied did not show any advantage to adding NMIs to general practitioner care. Two studies reported significant improvements of participants with poor control in mean haemoglobin A1c. An RCT that investigates the effect of NMIs on patients, with poor control in regard to clinical outcomes and cost effectiveness, is recommended. A 10-year journey in sustaining fall reduction in an academic medical center in Singapore
Conclusion: The implementation of fall-reduction strategies reduced the fall incidence rate in this acute care setting. However, more work is required to ensure the changes made to the fall assessment, interventions, and processes are sustained and incorporated in patient care. Best practice nursing care for ICU patients with incontinence-associated dermatitis and skin complications resulting from faecal incontinence and diarrhoea
Conclusion: : The project had created an awareness of IAD in the ICU. There was clear knowledge improvement and nursing staff were able to differentiate IAD from pressure injuries. The skin cleansing and protection regime is now more clear and consistent, and a single standardized product is being used to prevent and treat IAD. There was a small improvement in consistently documenting the condition of the perineal skin of patients with IAD; however, it was beyond the scope of this project to develop a policy and implement an IAD-specific skin assessment tool in the ICU, as this would have improved documentation of IAD in t...

Control of invasive meningococcal disease: is it achievable?
ABSTRACT: Neisseria meningitidis still leads to deaths and severe disability in children, adolescents and adults. Six different capsular groups of N. meningitidis cause invasive meningococcal disease in the form of meningitis and septicaemia in humans. Although conjugate meningococcal vaccines have been developed to provide protection against four of the capsular groups causing most diseases in humans, vaccines against capsular group B, which causes 85% of cases in Australia and the United Kingdom, have only recently been developed. A capsular group B meningococcal vaccine – 4CMenB (Bexsero) – has recently been license...

How do health care organizations take on best practices? A scoping literature review
Conclusion: Several gaps were identified by this review. There is a lack of research on how evidence-based practices may be sustained by organizations. Most of the research done to date has been cross-sectional. Longitudinal research would give insight into the relationship between organizational characteristics and the uptake, implementation, and sustainability of evidence-based practice. In addition, although it is clear that financial resources are required to implement evidence-based practice, existing studies contain a lack of detail about the cost of adopting and using new practices. This scoping review contains a nu...

Self-reported health-related quality-of-life issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients with experience of cancer in Australia: a review of literature
Conclusion: Previous literature suggests that there is urgency for improved communication and cultural competency in cancer care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in Australia, with a stronger focus on meeting patient needs and improving HRQL. This review has provided insight into HRQL issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients with cancer in Australia. Further work using patient-reported outcomes measures would provide greater insight into the impact of cancer and biomedical treatments on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients’ HRQL. Relationships between duration of practice, educational level, and perception of barriers to implement evidence-based practice among critical care nurses
Conclusion: The results suggest that critical care nurses possess the foundation to engage in the evidence-based practice process; however, their knowledge, practice, and attitudes just need to be cultivated and strengthened. Understanding the nurses’ professional factors, current use and barriers to implement evidence-based practice is an essential step to ensuring competency and value for engaging in the evidence-based practice process. The results of this study support the need for future research to address barriers that impact critical care nurses’ ability to deliver state-of-the-science care. (Source: Internation...

Clinical effectiveness of and attitudes and beliefs of health professionals towards the use of health technology in falls prevention among older adults
Conclusion: Good-quality literature regarding the effectiveness and acceptability of health technology in falls detection and prevention is lacking. Further research into both these fields is vital prior to wider implementation of such tools in clinical practice. (Source: International Journal of Evidence-Based Healthcare)
