The Cloud Gets Personal
Cloud computing, at its most fundamental level, is a technology that allows computing to occur as an on-demand utility. Personalized medicine is revolutionizing the field of medicine, and aims to provide individualized treatment for patients, based on their genetic material and medical history, through comparisons to genetic material from thousands of other patients. Better patient outcomes are expected in a personalized medicine domain as compared to more generic generalized options. In this paper the authors explore the use of cloud computing in the area of personalized medicine examining unique benefits and opportunitie...

REDAlert+
Each year, thousands of people in developing countries die due to delayed medical response. A common complaint is that emergency vehicles respond late and when they reach the hospital, precious time is lost in understanding the patient trauma before the doctors can get to work. A large number of deaths can be prevented if medical services can be provided to the victims in time, which can happen when the emergency wing of a hospital has advance information about the trauma before the patient reaches the hospital. Most hospitals lack communication infrastructure that allows them to coordinate with emergency vehicles bringing...

Beyond Digital Human Body Atlases
In this study, an integrated (vector-raster) 3D model, which defines the external surface of the human body, is expanded by adding the corresponding anatomical structures. The reconstruction of the anatomical structures begins with their segmentation, performed on transverse RGB images of the body. The expanded model, built with explicit topological features, enhances the functionality of the input model by optimizing the identification function and developing an inclusion analysis in 3D. The features of the expanded model allow exploring more efficiently the human body information and representation. (Source: Internationa...

Investigation on Healthcare Monitoring Systems
Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) services and applications have emerged as one of the most attractive research areas and have become more and more widespread especially for healthcare use. Lots of researches have been carried out to specify innovative services and applications using healthcare monitoring systems (HMS). However, the WBAN requirements vary from one application/service to another. Furthermore, HMSs are expected to reduce healthcare costs by enabling the continuous remote monitoring of patients' health even during their daily activities and thus reduce the frequency of the patient's visits at hospital. From...

Collaborative Environment for Remote Clinical Reasoning Learning
Despite the significant advances achieved these recent last years in terms of technologies widespread use in medical education, clinical reasoning learning (CRL) remains an extremely hard task in which there are still many gray areas that should be enlightened to better understand it. Furthermore, while CRL is basically a collaborative task implying the participation of many students and tutors working simultaneously on a same case, it should be considered from a social perspective. The authors followed then a collaborative-based learning approach, which consists in designing a shared workspace to support collaboration and...

Hospital Service Quality from Patients Perspective
This study aims to identify and analyse strategic service quality as perception-minus-expectation from patient perspective using SERVQUAL-based Handayani et al.'s framework. The result from 297 respondents shows that the criteria gaps are given as follows in descending order from the biggest gap: (1) responsiveness, (2) assurance, (3) professionalism, (4) reliability, (5) empathy and (6) tangible. Apparently, the gap for each criterion transpires to be significantly different which straightforwardly indicates the quality of the service delivered by hospitals for each criterion is still below respondents' expectations. Reco...

An Efficient and Lossless Cryptosystem for Security in Tele-Ophthalmology Applications Using Chaotic Theory
Tele-ophthalmology has gained a lot of popularity as it involves retinal fundus images which can be analyzed for identification of severe diseases like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. With this increasing popularity, requirement for medical data confidentiality and privacy has also increased during transmission or storage. To meet this challenge, this paper propose an efficient and lossless cryptosystem based upon chaotic theory for encryption of medical fundus images. In the proposed encryption scheme a strategic combination of scrambling and substitution architecture is proposed which complements each other. The propo...

Biometric Secured Electronic Health Record
Lot of Hospitals around the world are going through transformation from paper based to Electronic Health record system which can be accessed from anywhere. But with such Electronic health record, security is very much needed towards avoiding hackers and unauthorized personnel to access the medical record pretending as doctor or patient. Lot of research been conducted in regards to an authentication of the biometric system and security on the digital electronic health records of the health care organization. In such biometric system, there has been an increase in the false rejection ratio due to a slight difference in the p...

The Influence of National Factors on Transferring and Adopting Telemedicine Technology
Telemedicine has drawn increasing attention as a beneficial healthcare delivery medium, especially in developing countries that struggle with physician and health professional shortages, through providing health services in remote areas. This paper presents the findings of a survey conducted to investigate the national factors influencing the adoption of telemedicine technology in Iran, as a less developed country. Designing a self-administered questionnaire the data were collected from the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) of Iranian healthcare system. The findings indicate that political factors such as Information and C...

Users' Satisfaction with the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in the Kingdom of Bahrain
Today, many hospitals seek to adopt the latest and most sophisticated technologies in order to raise the service quality and users' satisfaction. The Electronic Health Record (EHR) had a substantial impact on the health sector and has enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare providers. The purpose of this research is to examine the factors that affect users' satisfaction with the current Health Record System in the Kingdom of Bahrain. A research model was built based on three popular models of users' satisfaction toward information systems. Toward achieving the research objective, a quantitative approach was...

Human-Factor-Based Risk Management in the Healthcare to Improve Patient Safety
‘Patient Safety' tries to increase safety and transparency within healthcare systems for both patients and professionals. Within the healthcare sector, workflows become more and more complex, while time and money become scarce. As a consequence, the risk awareness, fault management and quality asp ects become more important. One of the most well established risk assessment method is Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) – a reliability analysis and risk assessment tool widely used in various industries. The traditional FMEA is using a Risk Priority Number (RPN) ranking system to evaluate and identify the risk level o...
