Black-White Racial Disparities in Disabilities Among Older Americans Between 2008 and 2017: Improvements in Cognitive Disabilities but no Progress in Activities of Daily Living or Functional Limitations
The objectives of this study were to examine the prevalence of race-based disparities in cognitive problems, functional limitations (FLs), and activity of daily living (ADL) limitations between US Black and White older adults in 2008 and 2017, to explore how age, sex, income, and education attenuate these racial disparities, and to determine if Black-White health disparities are narrowing. Secondary analysis of the nationally representative American Community Surveys including 423,066 respondents aged ≥65 (388,602 White, 34,464 Black) in 2008 and 536,984 (488,483 White, 48,501 Black) in 2017. Findings indicate that Black...

Changes in Purpose in Life and Low-Grade Chronic Inflammation Across Older Adulthood
Conclusions: These results suggest that greater within-person increases in purpose may protect health processes particularly in early old age but become less effective in advanced old age.PMID:37643057 | DOI:10.1177/00914150231196098 (Source: International Journal of Aging and Human Development)

Fear of Falling Carries Over into Overprotection in Old Age: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis
This study presents secondary analyses from a larger trial. We tested the association between fear of falling and perceived overprotection in a cross-lagged path model controlled for falls, health-related quality of life, age, gender, and trial condition. N = 310 participants (M = 70 years, range: 64-92) completed self-reports at Time 1, 7 (Time 2), and 11 weeks (Time 3) after baseline assessment. We found a positive association from fear of falling to perceived overprotection (β = .12, 95% CI[0.02, 0.21], p = .02; β = .10; [0.01, 0.18], p = .03). The reversed cross-lagged paths were not significant. Findings suggest hig...

Relationships Between Diverse Forms of Anxiety With Intrapersonal Functioning Among Older Adults
This study assessed how clinical anxiety, anxiety about aging, and death anxiety related to one another and to intrapersonal functioning. Older adults completed the Geriatric Anxiety Scale, Anxiety About Aging Scale, Death Anxiety Scale-Extended, and Intrapersonal Problems Rating Scale. Clinical anxiety was strongly correlated with anxiety about aging (r = .50) and death anxiety (r = .59), and anxiety about aging and death anxiety were strongly positively correlated with each other (r = .51). Intrapersonal problems were significantly and strongly positively correlated with clinical anxiety (r = .79), anxiety about aging (r...

"Mi Familia Quiere Que Regrese": Retired Latin é Immigrants' Families' Expectations to Return to Their Country of Origin
Int J Aging Hum Dev. 2023 Aug 18:914150231194237. doi: 10.1177/00914150231194237. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted a quantitative, interdisciplinary study that investigated how financial concerns and varying family connections influence the retirement choices of Latiné immigrants in terms of returning to their country of origin. We hypothesized that being worried about one's finances for retirement, and having strong transnational ties, would lead to familial expectations to return to one's country of origin. Through data collected from a survey through Qualtrics, we found that higher levels of financial worry s...

Disability Among Older Immigrants in the United States: Exploring Differences by Region of Origin and Gender
Int J Aging Hum Dev. 2023 Aug 18:914150231196093. doi: 10.1177/00914150231196093. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRapid aging in American society will be disproportionately concentrated among the foreign-born. Immigrants in the United States (U.S.) are a heterogeneous population, yet little is known regarding their differences in disability later in life by region of origin. We use data from the National Health Interview Survey on respondents ages 60+ (n = 313,072) and employ gender-specific logistic models to predict reports of any activity of daily living (ADL) disability. After accounting for socioeconomic factors, compar...
