Delivering an integrated sexual reproductive health and rights and HIV programme to high-school adolescents in a resource-constrained setting
This study assessed an integrated, school-based SRHR and HIV programme, modelled on the South African Integrated School Health Policy in a rural, high HIV-prevalence district. A retrospective cohort study of 1260 high-scho ol learners was undertaken to assess programme uptake, change in HIV knowledge and behaviour and the determinants of barrier-methods use at last sexual intercourse. Programme uptake increased (2%–89%;P <  0.001) over a 16-month period, teenage-pregnancy rates declined (14%–3%;P <  0.050) and accurate knowledge about HIV transmission through infected blood improved (78.3%–93.8%;P <  0...

Community research collaboration to develop a promotores-based hereditary breast cancer education program for Spanish-speaking Latinas
AbstractBreast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in Latinas and the leading cause of cancer death. Latinas tend to be diagnosed at later stages, receive poorer quality care and have a higher risk of mortality than non-Latina White (NLW) women. Among women with a genetic predisposition to hereditary BC, genetic counseling can be beneficial. Latinas participate in genetic counseling at lower rates than NLW women. The goal of this study was to develop comprehensive, culturally appropriate materials for community health educators (promotores)-led hereditary BC education program for Spanish-speaking Latinas. We developed th...

Educating outdoor workers using tailored and financial messages to encourage safe-sun behaviors
AbstractExcessive and unsafe sun exposure represents a concerning hazard to the health of individuals. Of particular interest are those who are most susceptible to sun exposure, such as outdoor workers. The current study used a 3 × 2 between-subjects design to investigate the effectiveness of messages that varied the extent of personalization (i.e. generic message; occupation targeted message; individual tailored message) and the inclusion of content regarding financial consequences of skin cancer. Participants (N  = 304) were recruited from the USA through Amazon ’s Mechanical Turk and randomly assigned to view a g...

Implementation of preventive  measures to prevent COVID-19: a national study of English primary schools in summer 2020
We examined the feasibility of implementing preventive  measures to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission across 105 English primary schools in summer 2020 via a survey and interviews with headteachers. High rates of implementation of most recommended measures were noted with the exception of requiring 2 m distance for students, fitting hand sanitizers in cl assrooms and introducing one-way systems in school corridors. Measures such as regular handwashing and stopping assemblies were considered easy to implement. Majorly challenging measures included distancing between individuals (for students: 51%,N = 99; for staff: 34%;N...

Gender –sexuality alliance membership and activities: associations with students’ comfort, confidence and awareness regarding substance use resources
AbstractBelonging to a school Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is associated with lower substance use among LGBTQ+ youth. However, it is unknown whether GSA participation facilitates access to resources for substance use concerns. Using longitudinal data from 38 Massachusetts high schools, we compared sources of support for substance use concerns listed by GSA members (n = 361) and nonmembers (n = 1539). Subsequently, we tested whether GSA membership was associated with comfort, confidence and awareness regarding substance use resources in school and the community. Finally, we assessed whether specific GSA activ...

We sought to test risk and protective factor assumptions of the IPM using a prospective cohort study with 12  months separating baseline from follow-up. Participants were students in grades 8 and 9 in the national Icelandic school system enrolled in the spring of 2018 and 2019 (N=2165). Participants self-reported their experiences of cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and cannabis use and seven risk and protective factors. Analyses were conducted with ...
