Gerontol Geriatr Educ. 2023 May 27:1-13. doi: 10.1080/02701960.2023.2218819. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrainees may be interested in careers in aging but unfamiliar with career options, leading to a shortage in the geriatric workforce. In response to needs identified at a national geropsychology training conference, a multisite faculty group developed a six-session webinar series about careers in geropsychology, detailing career options in six unique settings. Each webinar session featured a moderated discussion with a panel of four professionals currently employed in the career of interest. The webinar was advertised ...

Do media portrayals of super-agers reduce or increase ageism toward older adults?
This study examined whether exposure to mass media stories about "moderate" super-agers (exemplary cognitive and physical skill levels) versus "extreme" super-agers (most extreme cognitive and physical skill levels) impacts young adults' ageism. Undergraduate participants exposed to media portrayals of moderate super-agers reported greater agreement with positive age stereotypes toward older adults, whereas participants exposed to extreme super-agers reported lower levels of ageism as compared to control participants. Based on these findings, young adults may perceive super-agers in a positive manner as super-agers highlig...

The medicare annual wellness visit: an opportunity to improve geriatric knowledge among internal medicine resident physicians
Gerontol Geriatr Educ. 2023 May 26:1-6. doi: 10.1080/02701960.2023.2217775. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Medicare Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) screens for risk factors of functional decline in older adults. However, the extent to which internal medicine resident physicians ("residents") perform the AWV and feel confident in addressing its clinical topics has not been formally assessed. The number of AWVs completed by 47 residents and 15 general internists in a primary care clinic were calculated for June 2020 through May 2021. In June 2021, the residents were surveyed about their knowledge, skills, and confidence regar...

Which interventions with youths counter ageism toward older adults? Results from a realist review
This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of which interventions in youths are most effective, under which circumstances, how, and with what outcomes. Using 46 keywords in 6 databases, a realist review identified 24 studies published between 2000 and 2022 targeting youths under 18. A content analysis of these studies led to the construction of a Context-Mechanisms-Outcomes explanatory model. Contextual facilitators triggering mechanisms for changing stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination were: 1) enhancing knowledge about aging and older adults by providing nuanced information, 2) improving the quality ...
