Latino grandparent opportunity to influence family health behaviors: The Healthy Us Grandparent Study (HUGS).
This study explored grandparent involvement in the care of Latino children in South Texas and their possible influence on child body mass index (BMI) and family health behaviors to determine if they present an opportunity to improve child obesity treatment plans. Methods: Partnering with the local school district, we surveyed parents (N = 174) and grandparents (N = 108) of 188 Latino, primary school-age children regarding grandparent care and family health behaviors. We weighed, measured, and interviewed children regarding grandparent care and their own health behaviors. Results: All groups exceeded state and national obes...

What to do with that policy paper (and why).
In this editorial we describe the clinician/administrator/researcher experience of frustration or confusion around how to effectively advocate for policy change in health care. By the end of the piece the reader will (a) understand the importance of health professionals’ advocacy; (b) know how to use policy papers to advocate; and (c) understand how policy organizations use policy papers. We also discuss the National Academies of Medicine, Science, & Engineering High Quality Primary Care report as an example of a policy paper, introduce our new coeditors for the Policy and Management Department, and describe the Collabor...

Depression complexity prevalence and outcomes among veterans affairs patients in integrated primary care.
We examined data from a VA study that used a visit-based sampling procedure to screen 10,929 VA PC patients for depression; 761 patients with probable major depression completed baseline measures of health and care engagement. Follow-up assessments were completed at 7 months. Results: At baseline, 53% of patients evidenced mental health conditions in addition to depression; 10% had concurrent AM, and 43% had psychiatrically complex depression (either with or without AM). Compared with patients with depression alone or depression with AM, those with psychiatrically complex depression evinced longer standing and more severe ...

Caregiver perceptions of importance of COVID-19 preventative health guidelines and difficulty following guidelines are associated with child adherence rates.
Discussion: Current results indicated parents perceive child adherence to social distancing more challenging than child adherence to mask wearing or hand hygiene. Lower caregiver perceptions of importance of the behavior and greater perceived difficulty in gaining child compliance were associated with lower adherence to all tasks. Brief targeted interventions (e.g., motivational interviewing, parent behavior management training) may be well suited to enhance caregivers’ perceptions of value of the behavior, while also addressing behavioral challenges that interfere with child adherence. Educating during the COVID-19 pandemic: The motherwork of Black women nursing professionals.
Discussion: Participants provided education to Black patients about controlling underlying health conditions and making lifestyle changes to reduce the impact of COVID-19. They advocated for changes in health care that reflect the needs and sociohistorical experiences of Black Americans to improve the overall quality of health care. This type of Black women’s motherwork or reproductive labor reflects a sense of Black consciousness stemming from their identity as Black women and their recognition of the importance of women in Black families and communities. Participants educated and advocated for Black patients while nego...

Evidence-based treatment delivery in nontraditional settings: Comparing treatment dropout, barriers, and attitudes in a mobile unit versus an outpatient clinic.
Discussion: Our results highlight the need to understand the impact of MHUs for delivering mental health services, specifically which barriers are addressed, how this influences treatment completion, and how delivery of services in an MHU can influence family perceptions of therapy. In it together: A dyadic approach to assessing the health-related quality of life and depression among infertile couples.
Conclusions: QOL and depression scores of 1 partner were reflected in the scores of the other partner. Henceforth, screening and psychoeducation should be couple based considering the couple as 1 unit which is likely to improve the mental wellbeing of the couple. The presence of depression is not influenced by the sociodemographic profile of couples therefore all infertile couples should be screened and offered counseling. Video calls during the COVID-19 pandemic: A bridge for patients, families, and respiratory therapists.
Conclusions: The findings shed light on the usability of video calls during this emergency period and their potential for future implementation. Parents’ experiences of caring for a child with autism spectrum disorder in the United States: A systematic review and metasynthesis of qualitative evidence.
Discussion: Parents must educate themselves on how to manage all aspects of ASD, and in doing so, often become experts not only in the individual needs of their own child and families, but in ASD more broadly. Family experiences contextualize key stakeholder knowledge for application across multiple systems, including education and health care services, home, and the community. Educational interventions that integrate family, service provider, and community perspectives are needed to address the stakeholder gap in knowledge. Family vulnerability, disruption, and chaos predict parent and child COVID-19 health-protective behavior adherence.
This study examined the role of family functioning in predicting family adherence to health-protective behaviors (HPBs) aimed at reducing COVID-19 spread. Pre-COVID-19 family functioning, disruptions to family functioning (cohesion, conflict, routines), and family chaos during the COVID-19 pandemic were tested as pathways to HPB adherence. Method: We utilized a sample of N = 204 families, comprising parents who had children (MAge = 4.17). Parents (MAge = 27.43) completed one survey prior to COVID-19 onset in the United States, and twice during COVID-19, at a 2-week interval. Structural equation modeling was used to test th...

Treatment barriers in PANS/PANDAS: Observations from eleven health care provider families.
Conclusions: We found numerous barriers to treatment of PANDAS/PANS among children of health care providers. Our findings suggest that even among the medically sophisticated, PANDAS/PANS diagnosis and treatment remains challenging. Improvement in PANDAS/PANS education of clinicians who may encounter children with this disorder is 1 key step toward addressing our identified barriers. Hispanic English language learner families and food insecurity during COVID-19: Risk factors and systems of food support.
Discussion: Taken with other research, results suggest that because of concerns around immigration status, ELL families may have less access to critical benefits that have supported other families throughout the pandemic, such as SNAP and CARES Act stimulus checks. Thus, to meet the urgent needs of persistent food insecurity, aid should refocus on using rapid response systems with community ties, such as mutual aid organizations and school systems, to provide financial and monetary support to low-income ELL families.
